Must give youngsters time. JWP and Shaw have had a drop in form/effectiveness at the same time as the whole team. They are young and when everything is rosy they play with freedom, but they won't be so effective when times are tough...doubt sets in and lack of experience shows. JWP has no doubt been told (or worked it out for himself) that his best chance to make it is to concentrate on what he is good at...dead ball or long ball delivery. He is getting fewer chances as Mauricio is trying to make up for the loss of key players and trying not to lose.

I think JWP true ability was there for all to see when I went to see him play for England U21 at Stadium MK recently.
He was the fulcrum of the team spraying the ball all over the pitch both long and short. He controlled the entire tempo of the game.
He does play a different role with Saints quite rightly as a "junior" player, fitting in around our star/senior players whilst getting more experienced, fitter and stronger

Now you're really clutching at straws. Do you suggest that when we have a free kick 30 yards out, or a corner, we should play the ball back to the goalie so we can start another bit of build-up play? If we have a player who can deliver the ball on a sixpence to whoever is in the box, is that not a perfectly legitimate attacking tactic, and not, as you say, cynical? And it is only part of JWP's game, as has been said above. He is 19 years old, and still learning to play at the level demanded of a Premier League player. It is to the immense credit of the club that he has been given that chance, and I am confident that their faith in him will pay massive dividends when he realises his full potential in a few years' time.

And as for your rugby analogy, it is clear you know little about that game if you think that (a) kicking penalties is a cynical tactic, and (b) Johnny Wilkinson does nothing else. He is a complete fly half, who uses the ball from hand or foot as the situation demands. If James Ward-Prowse becomes half the footballer that Wilkinson is a rugby player, we have indeed got ourselves a diamond.

He's 19 years old for goodness sake. Bound to have a dip in form.

I swear everything you write is about as wrong as possible. Since i havent posted southampton have had their worst spell of form and ward-prowse has been terrible. I havent posted as im working in china and can only watch games on footballorigin. Which isnt all that bad. I reccomend to everyone on this forum to get off it, get a life, maybe even come to china if you cant get a decent root in your own country.

The drop in our results is to do with loss of key team members and the quality of our opposition....this in turn can result in loss of confidence. You can't point at a nineteen year old and blame him for that. Shaw isn't quite as effective as before, partly because of injury/sickness and partly due to the drop in team performance. Obviously easier for youngsters to shine when playing in a confident team. Youngsters will have dips in form like any player, but also because of lack of experience. Saints doing poorly is more of a surprise to the younger players than it is to older players who've been there and got the T-shirt. JWP is not a flashy obvious player, but he is talented and is appreciated by his own manager and the U21 team manager.

Penalties are wrecking rugby, i didnt see much of wilkinson tbf. Hes had a great career and clearly played at the highest level so im not knocking him but more the culture of playing for penalties and dropgoals rather than breaking the lines and playing proper rugby.

Somehow I think that Rugby Union, as opposed to Rugby League (I struggle with rules in that game) has changed a bit as a game, but not necessarily can it be considered to be worse, the skills are different at the moment, but no doubt they will change again in the future and the traditionalists will be complaining as always, in my opinion it rather depends on the quality of the participants, Clubs and National Teams will play to the strengths of their best players. To my knowledge James Ward-Prowse never took up Rugby but I bet he would have been good at that if he had.

I love this talk of his young so is feeling the pressure of southamptons struggle. Its been good for chambers who has been incredible and an example of a talented footballer for this forum.

Ha ha. The truth will out. You are an egg-chaser and so know nothing about football at all. To be fair, you did well in your disguise as some things you said sounded knowledgeable. Good effort. Enjoy the rugby season :)

I regret responding already, but errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr what? Are we judging every player on how many goals they score? No one else knows anything about football? Hey maybe I'm wrong, but I'm sure some players do other stuff like defending.

No Qwerty, keep up. We now judge them by how many times they kick the ball over the bar :)

Reminds me of Vincent Tan getting in a pissy because David Marshall hadn't scored.

What position would you say JWP had at the start of yesterdays game? We had more midfielders than you could shake a stick at, it didn't work against Aston Villa, and for a while it didn't work yesterday, but eventually circumstances changed and the "extra" man began to influence the game, I prefer JWP on the left where he has a good rapport with Luke and they often swap places when the team goes in to attack mode. This system will work against certain teams, but I would prefer an extra striker, rather than an extra midfielder, but as rabbit says, I don't really know much about football!

That's what I was thinking, except Tan probably didn't say that, but rabbit definitely just did. :)

Begovic in. Actually that should happen, bad example.
