I understand what TSS is saying. Beckham was certainly not mediocre but, like JWP, there were areas where others were better. He made the most of his talents and also offered inspiration. Becks was considered to be the hardest working of the golden generation at United....I thought of that when JWP admitted that he leaves training last and has specialist training for free kick and corner taking. Interesting that Mauricio told him to concentrate on this during the preseason...must have made him confident that he would be involved this season. He also has a very mature attitude...this is his time if he is really going to make it...drinks and partying have ruined many a young player. Easy to get involved with a group of hanger-ons who don't really care about you.
Are you guys serious? Beckham in his prime was incredible, one of the greats. Sure he has made a name for himself, and kept his career goin for longer than perhaps he should, but in his younger days he had pace, power and ridiculous technique to boot.

I'm with TSS really. I'd call Beckham effective but not great by any stretch of the imagination. He was very limited in a lot of ways (no real pace, rarely carried the ball more than a few yards, incredibly one-footed) but exceptional in one or two and he worked very had to build a game around what he could. and deserves a huge amount of credit for that. That video above sums up his game really. In the vast majority of those clips he collects the ball, shifts it to his right foot and plays a good to great pass. In theory that should be very easy to defend against but Beckham kept doing it and kept doing it very well for years.
His scoring rate in England was pretty good but it's obviously boosted by those free-kicks and it really wasn't particularly impressive elsewhere. He was very effective for England in qualifying for tournaments because the smaller teams tend to sit back and defend against England. His pin-point passing and set-piece delivery into dangerous areas would help England break these teams down but in major tournaments his influence was nowhere near as great.

Beckham could turn a defence inside out, and a game upside down, with one perfectly timed and weighted pass or ball into space. Very few players can have that impact on a game. Of course he had his weaknesses, every player does, but at his best he'd have walked into any team anywhere in the world. In fact, he did.
If you take away Gerd Muller's goals, what else was he great at? You can still be a great player despite only being brilliant in a few areas. Beckham at his peak was around at a time when pace wasn't looked for in a winger as much, but crossing was.
A few months ago jwp was being talked up on the back of his good dead ball delivery. Without it he looks fairly useless. I think i was alone in pointing out his lack of footballing ability has anyone begun to pick up on this?
I dont think anyone on this forum knows anything about football. The jwp overreaction was regrettable but i dont think you will see his shortcomings ever if you havent already seen them. Great to see gaston get a goal. So far hes had a terrible season but is still outscoring pochettinos antifootballers: jwp, and wanyama. Tbf hes level with davis who has been good for us but a seriously limited footballer nonetheless.
I don't think you know very much about the people who post on this forum otherwise you would know that many of us have played the game to a quite decent level and you wouldn't have made such a stupid remark.
The difference between you and me is that I try to maintain a balanced view and see the strengths and weaknesses of different players while you are vindictive in your criticism of individuals.
I find it rather sad that some Saints fans have to get on the backs of certain of our players. Fox, Guly, Puncheon, De Ridder and recently Jos and Yoshida.
Your constant criticism of JWP holds no logic or reason and is beyond my comprehension.
No matter which one of our players you may choose to analyse you will find aspects of his game that needs improvement.
The good thing about Ward Prowse is that he is aware of the need to work hard to improve his all round game and he has the determination to do something about it.
He is a great credit to our football club.
Finally if you read my signature you will realise that I think you come in the second category.
Just get lost will you. 'Antifootballers'? What an earth do you mean by that? They are players who have different jobs, that is all. JWP is more versatile and has to play holding, wide, or attacking, whereas Big Vic and Stevie Davis have to do all the 'gritty stuff' - recycle the ball and play short passes. JWP is 19 years old remember, and he is being asked to play nearly every game, in not always the same position. Yes, he has had a dip in form from the start of the season but to describe him as an anti footballer and dismiss a guy who we have leaked goals without (Wanyama), and one of our most consistent performers, Davis, is ludicrous.

If any of you have watched rugby, the johnny wilkinson comparison is the most accurate for ward-prowse. Rugby was a beautiful game but has gone downhill with players kicking for penalties instead of playing running rugby. I dont think football will become as cynical but for me ward-prowse's style of play is a cynical tactic and one that isnt really that effective thankfully.
