Lol. Must admit we put one over you there. Keep an eye on Virgil Van Dyk. Central defender. Shows up well in Europe. No joking if he hadn't been playing against Barca it would have been double figures. He was a one man defence. Errr would you, like Effe Ambrose lol. If you think Jos is bad. FFS. Gets away with it up here and has had occasional good game in Europe, but accident waiting to happen. VVD is quality. He showed up really well against Milan, Barca and Ajax. Plays the ball out from the back. Scored a cracker on Thursday. Is powerful in the air and good first touch.
In fairness to Jos, he was a great buy for us in the Championship, and did a cracking job there (whilst also clearly being an integral part of the personality of the squad too). The Premier League is, sadly, a step too far for him.
He is a gem of a guy. Loads of stories about him up here. Has lot of time for the fans. He was a real favourite. Check out the Victor WANYAMA song on YouTube. Sung to some classical ****e lol.
Mustn't rewrite history. Jos may not suit us now, but he was involved in getting us promoted. Who could forget his Tuesday goals?
Well said Fran, unfortunately this is indicative of a lot of Saints fans who have very short and selective memories. Jos and Danny have played ther part in getting us to where we are now but like Deano, Billy etc, the club has outgrown them. I celebrate EVERY person that has been a part of our dramatic rise to the top, even the likes of the much maligned Lloyd James (who is doing great at Leyton Orient) who covered us at RB when we had no alternative.
Just because people don't think Hooiveld is any good now and joke about how bad now. It doesn't mean they don't thank him for what he has done.
Indeed, I think we all realise he isn't cut out for this level (though he is generally fine as backup, when he's not playing alongside Fox and Gazzaniga), but his impact in the championship season was vital. I really don't think we'd have been promoted without him. Though it's unlikely Celtic would want him back, I think he'd be very effective for them.
I don't think Fox was even that good in the Championship. His arrival just pushed equally capable left backs aside.
Hooiveld was our second best player in the Championship. I always thought Harding was poor, so I'm glad we got Fox for his assists!
He was an average-to-good left-back at that level, but his crossing and set-pieces were clearly what he was bought for.
Yeah, but joking about him now is just disrepectful and I don't like to see it, personally....some Saints fans act like "big time charlies" and forget where we came from.
He was no worse at defending than Harding (who was also ripped apart on these boards) and was clearly adequate for the Championship as we got promoted!.
It's all part of football. It's the same as if some one at you worked with does well for years but then declines in his/her usefullness. People will say how that person is crap at work etc the same as they do a football player.
