I have heard some gossip that Bassong was seen at Compton (Wolves training ground) over the weekend. What do you guys think of him and any chance he could be looking at joining Wolves?.
Bassong is a good defender with the potential to become very good if he has a run of games which he has not had at Spurs due to Gallas, Dawson, King , Kaboul being ahead of him. If you can snap him up he would be one of the best buys for wolves.
He did a very good job for us in the season before last, building up a good partnership with Michael Dawson and playing 38 games in total in a fairly solid defence. Last season he fell out of favour, was picked far less and it appeared to hurt his confidence. He's still got the potential to be a very good defender, in my opinion. Stick him alongside an old-school centre-half with decent leadership qualities and he wouldn't let you down. Would he join Wolves? Not sure. There are rumours that Stoke are interested in him too, which might suit him more as they have Europa League football and finished higher in the table.
The season we got 4th Seb had a good spell with Daws at CB where we went nearly 8 games without conceding. He's been unlucky in the fact that whenever Ledley's fit he gets dropped to the bench, so I am not surprised that he is looking for more first team football. Gallas' arrival did him no favours either. He can also double-up as cover at LB (was excellent there for the Toon) which we haven't really needed to utilise with Bale's emergence, and now with Rose as adequate cover it's not likely we will. Would be a great asset for any team IMO.
I like him. I've always felt he defended against strong strikers best, as he's quite clumsy and tends to get wrongfooted against faster more agile players. No offence but I'd be surprised if Wolves managed to get him and if you did, I'd expect it to be on loan. Rumours are we won't sell him for less than we paid and he belongs at a top half club, to be honest.
I wouldn't want to see us get rid of him. For a 4th/5th string CB hes played an awful lot of games. I think we need him currently, if hes happy to stay. I wouldn't mind a 6 month loan move, though. Just to boost his confidence.
Trouble is he's supposed to be unhappy at being a last resort, Solid. Also if we sent him on a 6 month loan he'd come back and then head straight off to the ACON.
Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that he's great back-up. I know nobody would be happy with being the guy that fills in when people get injured, but I wish he was.
As PNP has pointed out, he needs to be alongside a more senior, vocal partner, he's generally quiet, and I have heard him criticised for not giving a 'shout'. To expect him to lead and organise a defence would be a disaster. TBF thats only nitpicking really on a more than capable defender.
He's a good player, as Schteffen mentions above he does seem out of his comfort zone against agile opponents but for Wolves he'd be a top signing. Still very young too, only 24.
