Turns out that Joe was right to be suspicious about the car fire I witnessed near my home the other day.

Police have identified the two dead bodies as those of 45 year old Catherine Mbhala and 16 year old son Beki Ali, both from Zimbabwe.

They have also announced that whilst investigations continue, they believe that the son was murdered by the mother, who then drove the car to the seafront, parked up and set the car alight with herself and her son both in the front seats. It then exploded into flames.

Sounds horrible and barbaric.

 

Unfortunately it's quite common for suicidal people to feel they've got to take their kids with them. A car doesn't go up in flames like that by accident, and for some reason a lot of people seem to think that'd be a good way to go. I personally can't imagine many things worse.

 

Completely agree Fran . It is why films are quite often a dissapointment if you have read the book , best example I have is Stardust .

 

The Triffids were terrifying on the radio....less so when you can see them.

They test ran one tram in Edinburgh last night.

 

Is it ethical to block adverts online..? So the advertisers would have us believe. Apparently we're being unfair in using products like AdBlock Plus that get rid of those annoying things. Some websites are actually running little ads which try to explain why we should allow the ads through because they run their free website on ads. Well charge for the service then. And I won't turn up at all.

Apparently 60 million people actively use Ad Block and there are millions of other users of other ad blockers. Which leaves millions of twerps who haven't got around to it. There's your market, advertisers. These people either don't care or actually like adverts. Conversely, it's a waste of time advertising to me and plenty of others, so why shouldn't we use ad block software..? Besides, what about all that accumulated bandwidth the adverts would take up if I let them download to my browser..? In my contract to my ISP, I don't believe there is any small print which says that 25% of so of my bandwidth must be used to download annoying adverts. No thank you.

There are valid questions involved when small websites come into it. A lot of small websites rely on adverts 100% for income, so blocking them has a negative impact and makes it harder to sustain the website.

 

Yep, same with YouTube. People get paid for having ads on their videos.

 

I'm assuming AdBlocker is free, and it has Ads of its own to fund it?

 

Nope they haven't got ads. They ask people if they want to donate money when you download it.

 

Of course they are valid questions, I don't deny it. But if I have to go to these websites and be inundated by adverts, I'll go there once. On the other hand, I have donated to Wikipedia on several occasions. Once a year, they openly plead for money and I make a concious decision to donate or not. Most of the time I do.

 

Supposedly the arrival of ad blockers hasn't affected advertisers. Less than 5% of Chrome users have Adblock and those are the kinds of people who wouldn't click on the ads anyway, therefore the advertisers aren't losing their target audience.

Google owns YouTube and endorses Adblock, so clearly they're not too bothered, but Adblock is now trying to encourage users to allow ads which aren't considered intrusive.

 

Google aren't too bothered because they get a cut of a persons channel earnings either way.

It's my works Christmas meal tonight at Pitcher and Piano in Ocean Village. Never eaten in there before so I hope it's good. Then going to get my Christmas on in town....but will probably end up in either Popworld or Revs... Then I'll decide I don't want to crash at anyone's because I like to wake up in my own bed and end up paying £25 for a taxi home...which is probably more then I'll spend on drinks. Bit cold to walk 7/8 miles in the early hours at the moment.
