I saw Dan Petrescu is one of the names in the frame for the Crystal Palace job and it made me think of big name players who played for Saints in the later stages of their careers. Saints have had quite a few big name players towards the end of their careers but which older players do you think played well for Saints and which ones do you think flopped? Ill start with Dan petrescu He was brought in by Glenn Hoddle played 11 times for Saints scoring twice. I thought he did ok but Stuart Gray didn't by replacing him with Hassan Kachloul.
Hassan Kachloul. Loved him. Got sent off for head butting Lee Bowyer. Totally out of character but allegedly a racist comment from Bowyer.
It was Lawrie McMenemy's speciality, he was a genius at snapping up players late in their careers and getting the best out of them. Peter Osgood Alan Ball Charlie George Joe Jordan Frank Worthington ...to name a few. Kevin Keegan wouldn't really count, as he was at the top of his game when he came to us.
He's one of those players who should have/ could have been one of the best, if it wasn't for injuries. My favourite player we signed past their best was Le Saux.
Would have been, if we hadn't had to give up Wayne Bridge to get him. A Chelsea supporting friend of mine kept telling me we got the better end of that deal, but we really didn't. If we'd done the deal two seasons earlier, then maybe.
I agree although we never held onto our top players, so at least we got a competent replacement. It was a bad career move for Bridge also. Ashley Cole joined them a season later, and John Terry shagged his missus.
