Just yesterday I was saying to a mate how terrible I think his music is. Feel kinda bad now. Apparently he'd had a liver transplant earlier this year, so that could have something to do with it.

 

As you have all been talking about trains can anyone say what happened to those idiots who were trapped in their cars on Mount Pleasant crossing when the gates came down. The very first rule with a railway crossing is you don't drive on unless your exit is clear. There could have been an horrific disaster.

 

Not really. Trains rarely go more than 2 mph there.

 

Perhaps it's more of a lesson of how you might word likes and dislikes in the future. You dislike Lou Reed's music. That doesn't make it terrible. But, in your favour, you weren't criticising the person, just his art. Personally, I found Lou Reed's music a bit and miss, but some of the Velvet Underground stuff is good and I don't know anyone who dislikes any part of Transformer, which is brilliant in my opinion.

 

If you said we hadn't been given any dodgy penalties I would say "yes, that is correct". So they all clearly have guilty consciences.

Really? I'm guessing musical history isn't your thing then!? He was one of the great pioneers of the 70s. As TSS says, Transformer really is one of the truly great albums.

 

If you have access to Spotify or some other online music facility, check out the Transformer album. It was produced by David Bowie and his influence is apparent. There isn't a bum track on the album, in my opinion. My preferred tracks, if any, I've asterisked, but they're all strong.

I like the bands I like. Don't really care about the rest.

 

That's fair enough. However, if you ever feel that the music you are listening is getting stale, don't bother hoping and waiting for music to improve. There is a vast back catalogue from a huge amount of bands that will blow your head off. And you could select any single year and there would be a lifetime of memories in music. The catalogue is that rich.

 

I would think that everyone over the age of ten has heard Lou Reed's music-- whether his solo stuff or Velvet Underground, even if they didn't realize it was him.

Whether you care for his stuff or not, Lou Reed really transcended the world of rock music and into general pop culture. For that reason, it's probably worth at least reading his wikipedia entry or listening to the coverage on the news just to get the scoop even if you aren't going to listen to his records. I assume everyone's going to hear them plenty over the next few days anyway.

 

I'm gutted tonight, it's always profoundly sad when one of your heroes dies...It is true to say that not all of Lou's work hit the target but he was always willing to try something different and was a true pioneer who influenced whole generations of bands. and when he got it right his songs have the ability to move you on an emotional level as well as make you think differently about things. Lou was a true Humanist, who I feel really cared (and got angry) about his subject matter..just listen to his New York album.
I'm glad that I had the chance to see him live in 1986, supporting U2 at Wembley and to me he stole the show and it was clear to see the esteem that Bono held him in. He also hugely influenced David Bowie when Bowie visited New York in the late 60's and it can be seen in Bowie's work since then.
