Go to my Youth v Experience thread that I wrote 10 months ago, currently on the first page of our board...some of the answers you seek are in there.
Please God a manager who wants us to play football through, rather than over, midfield. Would love Cloughie but let's face it, that's not going to happen. Someone with Martin Allen's Charisma and (don't shoot me) Mark Stimson's belief in the passing game. Would rather go down passing than hoofing. Time for some style (attempted at the very least).
Im not actually annoyed with the sacking of allen. Yes he gave us champions of league 2 but i feel that it was a very poor league last year and if it was anything like previous seasons we would have seen another play off scrape. Some of martin allens decisions have left me wondering and i think they are being caught out now. The good allen has done is bring in a top gk and cb pairing (although i feel that essam and davies would have done just as well) but lately feel his negative points have out weighed the positive - upsetting charlie lee, whelps, ect releasing jack payne and even jackman has been a mistake as gregory and hollands have not filled there roll at all in comparison. So i would say i am happy with the news as i think martin allen has now reached his level. Peter taylor pleaee
Ive not been around much recently, but its good to see brb is still peddling his Youth v Experience policy!!!
haha, hello Lenny. Question: considering that thread was created ten months ago, please feel free to highlight any points that you feel are inaccurate. Remembering it was foresight not hindsight that led to that thread and the warnings for today and Sunday when it was announced of MA's departure. MA broke his own model this season by bringing in Cody and Bayo to appease the fans.
You mean you would rather watch Tony Pulis's team !! Just my opinion as I said but I don't think it would be a good idea. Results may improve in the short term but as someone else said on here, should he re-build his rep (How did he lose it in the first place) he would be off like a shot anyway. So again not for me please.
My question to you brb is this. Do you honestly think our league position would be any different had MA thrown in a few youngsters earlier?
No I said what I wanted to say, the team played better football under Taylor than they did under Pulis, and unlike Pulis his substitutions in the play off final won us the match whereas Pulis subs in the city game cost us the match.
Good question Lenny. The answer is no. MA had already made the changes last season that did the ultimate damage. Sadly he aggravated that situation with the appointment of Cody and Bayo and in turn broke his own manufacture. In fairness to MA it was indicated somewhere in the media that he acknowledged very early on that he was not sure he had made the right decision with Bayo. I really don't want to get into tactics here more the principle of what he built. Hence back to your question. Jackman and Evans would have been great additions to his thin squad in his time of need and what with the recent injury to first Fish then Harriman...the gods were against him. I've not even covered half the players that exited. So NO it would have made no difference this season but it was MA that had removed the building blocks...the only unanswered question is why?...and why the hell did Scally not reign him in sooner on those transfers and listings...poor building blocks all round imo.
To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised at due to Essam, Evans, Jackman and Payne being given the boot played some part in Hess leaving the role of Director of Football for which he excelled at. After all it would have been very undermining that the major parts of his team were being disbanded right in front of his eyes.
OK I agree Halsey played his part, but the introduction of a 4th Centre half who just got in the way was instrumental in both goals we conceded, dont get me wrong Pulis is a Gills legend and actually is my favourite manager, but Taylor finished the job that he started.
I am surprised that there isn't a manager who has succeeded in one of Europe's Lesser League's who have not considered using Gillingham as a stepping stone to go onto bigger and better things, A lot of manager's and coaches are coming from foreign leagues and with the appeal of English Football I would of thought someone would of been keen to manage a third / fourth tier English Side and build up their managerial reputation here under the watchful eye of Championship / Premier League Clubs - like what Paolo Di Canio did at Swindon before his terrible reign as Sunderland Manager. Steven Constantine would be a fantastic appointment if we could get him as manager, I don't want Peter Taylor as manager because I don't want to look backwards to try and take the club forwards - Andy Hessenthaler's second spell as manager is a prime example of this, sentimental managerial appointments don't work. I just don't want us to go for the same old names again who are always linked to various managerial jobs in England, it would be nice if we were to make a left field managerial appointment who has not managed Gillingham Football Club before.
Holloway ? He's 'done it' before at a small club ( Blackpool - and playing good football ! ) - and At least the press conferences would be entertaining
I think if Peter Taylor can get results from our next three league games then he will get The Gillingham Managerial Position on a permanent basis. Adam Barrett and Danny Kedwell have spoken very highly about Peter Taylor in the local press this week.
