Moyes took Everton from relegation candidates to a side competing for a European place every year, on a budget of less than £10m net over his entire 11 year tenure.

The rest of his spend (aside from the Rooney windfall) was self generated i.e. buying cheap & selling high, he did that consistently over 11 years, whilst improving the overall quality of our squad / play & competing at the right end of the table.

If you think that's been surpassed by Martinez in 1 window, then you've got rocks in your head mate.

EDIT: his best signings in the window were loans, Deulofeu, Lukaku & Barry - the comparison to Moyes will be made over his purchases - McCarthy, Robles, Alacaraz & Kone.

Wouldn't think the last 3 will get much game time (and not their biggest fan either), but I do like McCarthy, has he played much since you bought him? Or is Barry taking his spot for now?

I haven't said any such thing. I've said it's not that hard to get good deals. In his first window, the new manager did better [one on one on any window] than Moyes, who many, if not all blues, regarded almost unique in being able to do so. How you could read that as being compared to Moyes sum total, goodness knows.



I couldn't care less about Moyes net spend/whole tenure!

McCarthy has played about an hour in total so far, so we've barely seen him as yet.

Kone looked absolute dogshit in his 1 start & looks like a potential waste of dosh (plus he's 29)

Alcaraz will get some game time imo & Robles is decent back up for Howard.

But my point was that there's about £22m been spent there & the measure will be how much they're worth in a few years time if we look to re-circulate the cash, which is where Moyes excelled.

You can't say he's done any better though can you, that's the entire point, as you're judging his success largely on the loan signings & not on the £22m he spent. Only time will tell if those purchases were as astute as his predecessors were, you're merely applying your subjective opinion to it, the facts & figures will be the genuine judge.
 
Obviously it's far too early to make any true comment about either Moyes or Martinez. Of the two it would appear that Moyes is far more secure in that the club will back him for far longer.

The above discussion concentrates on players but we have to also look at managerial performance. Moyes does have a history of getting performances out of Everton. Martinez on the other hand has a history watching his side fail miserably mid-season and escaping by the skin of his teeth at the end of the season. If he repeats that level of performance then I can see Everton getting rid.

After every transfer window there's the usual dissection of who did best, an initial reaction if you like, that's what I've tried to do, looked at Martinez business over one window and who he managed to attract to the club - not how they will perform over a season, how could anyone possibly do that before it's even happened?

Based on his signings I think Martinez has matched, if not out-done any of Moyes dealings in a window based solely on those signed. You tell me then what was Moyes best initial window - meaning not taking into account how they actually panned out.

There's a whole generation who've only known success and given the impatience in modern football, nobody will be surprised if he gets his marching orders. Actually I don't think anything relating to managers tenures could surprise any more. [the record is 10 minutes!!!! Rosenior @ Torquay]

Your initial point was a side swipe at Moyes, as you were saying that what he'd done in the market was nothing astounding when compared to how Martinez has done so far.

Moyes strength was his transfer dealings, his record stands up to anyone's, pound for pound Moyes did a marvellous job in that regard & I think to look to belittle it is unjust tbh JB.

If Martinez is still in the hot seat in a decades time then maybe we can compare & contrast then eh.....
 
He did a decent iob at a club like Everton over the decade. United is a whole new ball game.

Can I say first and foremost that I don't have one hundredth of the interest in Everton that you have in Liverpool.
I don't read blue kipper[?] like you read rawk.
I don't study and assess Everton's accounts like you do ours.
I don't watch any Everton games like you watch all of ours.
I most certainly wouldn't read a 115 page report in full for any rival teams' player like you did the Suarez report.
I don't even know Everton's starting 11..... but ....

from talking to my bluenose mates and from reading forums like this, the general consensus of blues is that Moyes was fantastic in the transfer market, so good he could be considered almost unique in his astuteness. Now I only have their word for this because I pay no attention to who you sign unless like in this window you were one of the two most talked about when the window shut, for doing the best business. I therefore have the view that Moyes must have been very good at transfer dealings. Now he's left and the new man as one of his first acts, has had a great transfer window, so good my bluenose mates can't remember the last time they were so excited by multiple signings. That leads me to say that Moyes wasn't unique then in this area.

As we all know the new signings don't always live up to their expectations and this time next year there will be another conversation to be had but the initial feeling amongst blues is very positive. It shouldn't need saying that you can't compare him to Moyes until those players have had a season that was never my intended argument.

Just to ask you again, which window under Moyes had you this positive?
