ASUS are a respected manufacturer in the IT industry, amongst repair engineers. Acer are... well, I'd rather not say.

BTW, don't change from trad desktop/tower to laptop, unless your desktop is truly ancient. Add a laptop by all means.

My brother had an Acer that he loved at first, but it became unusable very quickly. I'm not sure if this was through him mistreating it or not, but still.

Yeah, I have an ASUS router, and the thing is beastly. For kicks after buying it, I messed with the settings for optimal range and walked down the road...granted, that was in an area with lowish interference, but I was getting a workable signal over 100m away.

And I have a Gateway laptop, which is an Acer mark. As Joe says, they generally have a great spec-to-cost ratio, but you do need to be a bit wary because they are known to be less than sturdy. Mine is still working without fault, though it took using modded drivers to get decent performance from the wireless card.

Don't quite know what you mean by that No1J, but I'll do a quick explanation of what I mean. Pound for pound, a traditional tower/desktop will easily beat a laptop performance wise. It'll also be easier to use in one place and, if anything goes wrong, it is far cheaper to repair or even upgrade. Oh, and laptops don't have anything like the reliability either. They have one single advantage. You can carry them around, room to room or over distances. I use my Samsung Galaxy S2 when I'm out. It's good enough for using as a computer outside. As for indoors, use a trad tower/desktop. Even the display can be miles bigger and better. To be honest, it's a no-brainer.

Apple..? Nice, but way overpriced. I won't part with actual money for kewl alone.

Not similar equipment at the same price. The performance divide used to be miles wide. Nowadays it's a lot closer, but it's still a no-brainer. You won't find me buying a laptop any time soon. Mind you, I hardly actually buy any equipment, though I do have more computers than I have uses. :)

To be fair, I love my laptop insurance. I've pretty much always got my money's worth from it.

Wow... Balotelli just missed the penalty. That's the first time he's ever missed a penalty.

Yes, I've yet to find an insurance agreement pick up a screwdriver, take a computer apart, repair it and allow me to keep all my data intact. I have found that an insurance agreement costs some money though. That's not a good feeling. :(

Had my ASUS for 3 years now. Can still play the new FM on it with ease, so that's fine with me. My bro got a Acer about the same time and had it repaired twice before buying a ASUS when it broke down the third time.
