Clean slate for catts

Paolo Di Canio will offer a clean slate to Lee Cattermole at Sunderland, but Cabral faces an uncertain future.

Di Canio has overseen an extensive rebuilding project at the Stadium of Light, with the summer transfer window seeing 14 fresh faces drafted into the Sunderland squad.

Inevitably, an influx of new arrivals has forced some of those already on Sunderland's books down the pecking order.

Cattermole - who skippered the side under Martin O'Neill and Steve Bruce - fell into that category and looked set to be on his way out of the club at one stage, with Hull City, West Ham United and Cardiff City all reported to be keen.

The combative midfielder has, however, remained on Wearside and will be given an opportunity to force his way back into first team contention by Di Canio.

Paolo Di Canio said: "I have to be honest, he wasn't in my plans. I told him, to have a future here he had to convince me.

"I need British players, I need the quality, the intensity. I need the fire. He's full of enthusiasm and it's a new start for him."

While Cattermole is back in Di Canio's thoughts, Cabral - who joined Sunderland as a free agent over the summer - finds himself out of favour after just one competitive appearance.

Di Canio said of the 24-year-old midfielder: "At the moment he's behind three other players who have got ahead of him. It's very difficult for him.

"Maybe one day, if he can show me that he understands football, then yes he will play again.

"Otherwise, in the middle, especially against top sides, we will get beaten. At this moment, Cabral has got difficulties."

What has Cabral actually done wrong? What are these problems PDC talks of? The lad was possibly motm against Fulham, had a poor game in the cup (along with most if the team tbh) and then hasn't been seen since?

He was playing European and champions league football last year and now can't get a game over Vaughan or Larsson in the middle?

As for Catts, the whole thing is further evidence PDC had neither a plan or a direction at the club. He is the Hokey Cokey manager. You're in, you're our, you're shaken all about whilst we lurch from one team selection to the next . Players are favourites and villains at the drop of a hat and that confusion is apparent on the pitch. I think we have a pretty decent squad thanks to a good backroom set up but I am totally not convinced PDC will get the best out of them.

That said, Catts will be a very welcome sight for me in a red and white shirt.

Apart from the likes of Bardsley, who deserved to become an outcast, I haven't seen PDC say what people claim, or wish to imagine, he's said.

I'd just like to add that with the Cabral situation that none of us see training so we'll never know, I do know more than Paolo works with the players at coaching and paolo is famously close to his coaches and completely trusts their opinion, so I'm going to back the coaching staff 100%, and not judge the situation without any proof.

I bet Di Canio wasn't impressed with the amount of shots Cabral took vs Fulham instead of moving it on.

Although I've only seem two games from him he doesn't seem like a dm at all. Which is why I'm excited for Catts, a genuine defensive midfielder coming back

Vaughan and Larsson are as poor central midfielders as there is but are picked. Ji is a shambles but gets a game? Catts is basically told to go and find a club then is suddenly back in favour?

Bardsley had been a terrific committed player for us winning fans player of the year but makes a totally wrong mistake and is suddenly a pariah when we didn't have any alternative?

If that's the actions of a manager with a plan then he is rewriting the rule book.

Oh I'm very excited about Ki. His vision is exceptional. There was one pass that made me purr like a pussy. Where Jack was on the overlap and Ki threaded between Mavias and their player to find Jack free in space in a very attacking position. Oh my god I nearly Jizzed, he's a different class compared to any of our midfield options. Him and Catts. Catts protecting the back four and Ki spraying passes to the front four. Connecting defence with attack. I'm convinced that was our problem under MoN and Paolo's problem upto his addition to the squad. It looks exciting and promising.

Ropberge was to blame for us losing the first game - Cabral was woeful against a lower league opposition so simply saying they played well is subjective and both had great points and bad points in the first games they played. Cabral has a problem - Di Canio got slated by a number of people on here for his comments re O'Shea - he has not said exactly what the problem is with Cabral but he is the one who works constantly with him - wouldn't everyone get on his back if he came out and said "Cabral isn't good enough, he does x, y and z".

I have loads of time for you Cest - and also agree it's all about opinions but ours differ here - did you not see how right he got it against Arsenal in the second half at the weekend? He knew he got it wrong in the first, made the change and this made a big difference.

He has his flaws but he also has a lot of good points - I just hope you can see the latter instead of being blinded by the former

Got no problem with your disagreeing mate. That's what these forums are all about.

So if Roberge was to blame for Fulham and has been dropped as you say, should JOS suffer likewise for costing us us the Palace game? Should any player be then dropped every time they make an error? Cabral played and looked pretty good to me against Fulham but struggled in the cup but then so did 5 o 6 of them and they still played after? One minute Catts is a liability and has to be moved on the next he is a player with a future? We simply haven't seen enough of either Roberge ( who apart from the missed header looked like a bloody half decent footballer to me) or the lad Cabral. If both had sedn 5 or 6 games and not done it I could understand it. Ji was simply awful but got another 2 or 3 appearances after.

You see, it's this irrational and complicated management behaviour that concerns me with PDC. I don't think the players know if they are coming or going and are scared to make an error for fear of being singled out on a press interview or dropped for the next game.

Management by fear is the least productive style there is. We have a pretty decent squad imo thanks to our director of football and chief scout but I don't think PDC will ever get the best out if them.
