I think another player will really make the footballing world take notice. A Suarez or other would make people realise that Arsenal are serious about the investment in the team & are creating something. What people will also realise is they just spent 42m on a player, and have come nowhere near breaking FFP rules.
I've only just recovered from John Cross's summer of delusion, I don't think I could handle another window of him getting his hopes up and then shattered again as Henry is forced to make another statement to shut up the rumors of a transfer that was always non-existent.
Hi - Forest fan here, but one that really wants Arsenal to be back challenging for league honours. Whilst Mesut Ozil is a tremendous signing I believe you needed a top quality striker too. The decision to attempt to try and sign Suarez instead of Higuain was always doomed from the start. I don't think you've done enough to catch up to Chelsea/Man Utd/Man City but hope I'm proved wrong.......
I still think this season is too early to hope to be challenging for the title come May, and that the summer window still wasn't ideal, but bringing Ozil in is a fantastic start and a true sign that the team can compete in the market with the biggest teams. I'm also hoping he'll be the catalyst for other players to join. I imagine any striker in the world would love to benefit from his service.
We should definitely try to go for Suarez in January again.
The logic being used for writing off Arsenal chances this year seems to be a bit sketchy at best. I've heard this one about us needing a striker before and I even read an article that said if we had got Demba Ba then we really would have been contenders. Really? Demba Ba significantly better than Giroud or Podolski? Honestly? Just because he had a good run at Newcastle where there was no one else who could score? And Arsenal's defence is too weak? On what basis? At least we don't have one of the England defenders who are a shambles every international!
Nobody is saying that Ba would be significantly better, but more about it being for cover should Giroud get an injury or go through a lack of form. Podolski and Walcott are not nailed on CFs for us and are at present, left and right sided players respectively. Ba is a natural CF and a proven one at that.
We are Arsenal though. A club that has become almost synonymous with TOP forwards. Thierry Henry, Iain Wright, Robin Van Persie, Dennis Berkamp etc.. We will have to see how Giroud does. He seems to be improving. I still think he could end up being a very effective player for us but he needs to improve his finishing. Statistically he was actually quite poor last year when you break it down. His conversion rate was only 12%. In other words 1 goal for every 8 goal scoring opportunities/shots. Compare that to.. Robin Van Persie 18% Conversion Rate (26 goals from 141 shots) Dimitar Berbatov 19% Conversion Rate (15 goals from 81 shots) Lukas Podolski 20% Conversion Rate (11 goals from 54 shots) Javier Hernández 23% Conversion Rate (10 goals from 44 shots) or the Top players in Europe.. Edison Cavani 19% Conversion Rate (29 goals from 156 shots) Gonzalo Higuian 30% Conversion Rate (16 goals from 56 shots) Zlatan Ibrahimovich 19% Conversion Rate (30 goals from 157) Robert Lewandowski 24.48% (24 goals from 98 shots) Lionel Messi 29.9% Karim Benzema 23.3% C Ronaldo 21.8% Saying all that though I think he could still do well for us with his workrate and ability to bring in the midfield. But he does need to greatly improve this side of his game if we are to challenge.
I think the quality of the chances supplied is also significant. As a unit of measurement, the "chance" is very unspecific.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to sign Ilkay Gundogan, 22, of Borussia Dortmund and 24-year-old Lars Bender of Bayer Leverkusen. Full story: Daily Mirror And the Gunners boss has also requested a scouting report on Borussia Dortmund's 24-year-old Germany forward Marco Reus. Full story: Daily Telegraph As well as being linked to Suarez again yesterday. Looks like the media expect us to spend again in January!
This is probably it. The truth is, Wenger has his cards so close to his chest sometimes that we only know until the last hour. Ozil was the prime example of this. I don't think anyone in their wildest dreams would have guessed we would have pulled this one out the bag. But I really do hope we go in and get Suarez this Jan. We truly would be a very potent team indeed.
If we are challenging for trophies in January,i think there is a good chance we could make a move for another marquee signing.Suarez would make a good target as he wouldn't be cup tied from the CL
For me Suarez is the man we should really go for, as our midfield is looking good at the moment with Ramsey seemingly stepping it up, Flamini in and Arteta coming back from injury (saying that, I wouldn't say no to Bender). If we put more pressure on Liverpool, then Suarez might just ask for that move. If we are near the top spot and we are looking like the dangerous side of old (Ozil effect), this could make Suarez hand in a transfer request.
I was listening to Mickey Thomas(ex Welsh international and printer of £10 notes) on Talksport yesterday and reckons that if Ramsey hadn't been injured he would have been the subject of inquiries by Barca & Fascist Madrid by now
