How devout exactly? Has he ever fasted when Ramadan happened to be during the season?

I'm not a religious expert but can't Muslims get a dispensation during Ramadan so that they can eat under certain circumstances

I think so, but not entirely sure. During Ramadan there have been Muslim players before who are fasting and still play though.

If you are ill, pregnant, old or going through menstruation then you do not fast. As for sports, it is debatable whether Islamically this is allowed. Certain opinions range from avoiding situations where it conflicts religious practices and some scholars (few) say that you can. Many Muslim sports people opt to fast during Ramadan eg. Ba, or just avoid doing physical exercise such as Amir Khan, who opts to observe Ramadan and fight a couple of months after. This is an interesting article on this: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2871...old-me-to-choose-between-fasting-or-playing-i.

Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil has admitted: "Because of my job I cannot follow Ramadan properly.

"I do it only the few days I can, only when I have a free day. But other than that it's impossible, because you have to drink and eat a lot to stay at peak fitness."

I always thought that the driving factor for Ozil was Wenger and it confirms it in the following statement he made. Add to the fact he will be playing in the most competitive league in Europe, German selectors would have also been happy with the move to Arsenal.

Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff on Mesut Ozil's move to Arsenal: "Firstly, I am very happy for Mesut that he has joined such a great club. I believe that he will develop further in London, both athletically but also personally.

"After three years of Spain, and the departure now, I think he ha established himself well. And now it is another country, a new mentality, a different way of playing football, an outstanding traditional club with a great coach who can deal well with young people.

"And a team that might not have the glamour of Madrid, for now, but in which he can take on more responsibility."

New Arsenal signing Mesut Ozil says the influence of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was the key reason behind his move to the Premier League club.

"I'm really looking forward to it because I have the faith of the coach," the Germany midfielder tells DFB TV in an interview which has been published on Arsenal' official website. "I had spoken to him at length on the telephone and he explained his plans and that he has faith in me and that is what I need as a player.

"I'm also looking forward to being on the same team as [Germany team-mates] Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker. I'm looking forward to the new challenge there."

"Arsene Wenger will give me the trust to help me develop further. I want to be completely fit for the World Cup. I know what I can do and what potential I have. I could have established myself at any club. I know that because I'm convinced of my own ability.

"At Arsenal, I can feel that there is trust. I'm looking forward to the challenge. I will develop under my new manager and I'm looking forward to [playing in] the Premier League too. Wenger gives me the faith and I can develop further."

Ozil is right, he has the ability to establish himself at any club. It just goes to show how important the lure of a top manager can be. Wenger has obviously convinced him he can be an integral part of our project to get back to the top and in the process improve himself as a player.

With the financial ability to get players like this and Wenger showing he is the man who can attract those players i can see us creating a very good team over the next couple of seasons!

I don't think we can underestimate the impact of this signing. Not only is Ozil a top quality talent, but it puts Arsenal back on the map as a force and will help us to attract other players of his quality in the future. It's a real building block for the future and I think the club should be commended for pulling off such a high profile addition to the squad.

Definately guys and I think the talk he had with Ozil was also alluding to us being in the business for top players again. But respect to Ozil for coming to us for footballing reasons. Where best can he go to get the kind of finishing school than here with Arsenal and Wenger. He will become an even better player with us.

    Absolutely.

Wenger is first and foremost a coach. He has always been fantastic at getting players to achieve their potential.

I have no doubt Ozil will continue to improve at Arsenal.

    3) Since Aug 08 Mesut Özil has created 353 chances from open play - more than any other player across Europe's top 5 leagues.
    4) 92 key passes in La Liga last season (2nd)
    5) Created the most chances from open play in the Champs League last season

I'm looking forward to Ozil linking up with Walcott particularly. He is a very smart player and will know how best to make the most of Walcott's ability. I still think we haven't seen the best of Walcott and we might even see him being more destructive this season.

Totally agree with this. With Theo making diagonal runs inside and Ozil and Santi to put him through, he could get a lot of goals. If you add Giroud pulling the CB's out of position it also opens up even more space for Theo.

A lot of Muslims turn nocturnal for Ramadan. They eat a meal just before dawn, and then sleep from noon 'til 8pm or so.
