Athletic Bilbao have rejected Manchester United's £25.5m bid for Ander Herrera but the midfielder was kept on the bench during a 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid. Photograph: Guillermo Martinez/Corbis
David Moyes faces a frantic last day of the transfer window after an unconvincing display from Manchester United's midfield reinforced the need for a major signing before the 11pm deadline.

Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera and Everton's Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines are targets but Moyes may have to return to their respective clubs with a final, deal-making offer.

Daniel Sturridge's goal at Anfield consigned Moyes's side to a league start of four points from three games. Yet the Scot claimed that on the basis of what he described as United's "best performance" so far, he would not be concerned if no additions were brought in before Monday's deadline. The manager has had a €30m (£25.5m) offer for Herrera and a £36m joint bid for Fellaini and Baines rejected while he has also inquired about Roma's Daniele De Rossi.

"We will continue working for what's left of [the window] to try and get what we can in," said Moyes. "I've got to say I was really impressed with how the players played today. I tell you what Ican see why they're champions. So as far as transfers go we've only got I don't know how many hours left but not too long to wait."

Moyes said he would not be concerned if he bought no one before the window's closure. "Well, not [on] today. I thought they played really well," he said. "They dominated [the] game for long periods without us maybe having the final bit, the final pass, cross at different times." The Scot would not be drawn on how confident he is of strengthening. "I couldn't give you a heads-up one way of the other at the moment," he said.

The Bilbao coach, Ernesto Valverde, left Herrera out of the side that lost 3-1 to Real Madrid but said he does not expect the midfielder to move. If United meet Herrera's €36m buy-out clause, Athletic will be unable to prevent his departure, so long as the player wants to leave. Valverde said: "He is a very important player for us. My decision today [to put him on the bench] had nothing to do with the offer."

While Baines and Fellaini are reportedly keen to join United, even a bid of £40m or more for both may not be enough. Everton are thought to be more minded to allow only Fellaini to depart.

Chelsea's Victor Moses, Paris Saint-Germain's Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori of Sporting Lisbon were at Anfield to see the win over United and Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, hopes to complete their respective deals on Monday. The defenders Sakho and Ilori should join for a combined fee of around £25m while Moses should arrive on a season-long loan from Stamford Bridge.

"We hope they can be completed later but there will be no confirmation until tomorrow," said Rodgers, who may also sign the Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given as cover for Simon Mignolet. The striker Fabio Borini may go out on loan to Sunderland or Queens Park Rangers.

I think he's OK, but we need people to play behind the strikers, if you ask me, not more strikers.

I saw a bit of him when he was in the Swansea promotion winning team.

Granted it was in the championship but I thought he looked a cracking player. Quick and skilful.

I would say he's more like a second forward or capable of playing across a front 3 rather than a striker.

But if Ji is going he needs replacing. Do you think Fletch, Jozy and Wickham adequate till January? I don't. Even if Ji stays I'd like another striker.

Well if we're talking about a dream deadline day I'd send wickham on loan, sell Ji and bring in two more strikers

Public and media, well all that's non Sunderland are telling us we've signed too many players. They've no Idea how wrong they are and how much of a mess we were in now let alone 3 months ago. I blame Bruce.

Good signing if it comes off, we have no striker like him at the club and he will be able to drop deep into midfield when we play 4-5-1 against the big boys.

If he comes he has my full support and hopefully the Italian connection works in our favour. Surely this means Ji is going out, I will be foaming if w sell Sess and kee Ji purely because of wages.

I watrched hijm a few times last season when he got a game for Liverpool and he looked average at best - an Average Sessegnon performance is far better than the Best Borini that I saw (and my Liverpool supporting mate has offered him a lift to the SoL on Facebook!) So guess not much good then.

If he pulls on the red and white he'll get my full support - but I don't think he improves us as a squad at all - and what would be far worse is if Sessegnon goes to WBA as guaranteed he'll be class. Me - I'd rather we kept Sessegnon than signed Borini but I appear to be in a minority of people who enjoy watching one of the most naturally gifted players we have had in my lifetime

Done deal apparently. Here's what the BBC had to say about him........

    BORINI TO SUNDERLAND

Italy football writer James Horncastle: "No one will be more pleased to see Liverpool striker Fabio Borini nearing a loan move to Sunderland than Italy coach Cesare Prandelli. It's hard to understate how highly regarded the 22-year-old is back home.

"A member of the Azzurri's Euro 2012 squad after scoring nine goals in his only season at Roma, Borini's first one at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers, his former mentor during his time at Chelsea's academy, was desperately unlucky. Injuries meant he never really got to show his worth.

"Should Borini get a run of games under his compatriot Paolo Di Canio at the Stadium of Light, then he will score goals. He has an instinct for them, which in the past has led to comparisons with Pippo Inzaghi."

The Liverpool Echo confirmed the news at lunchtime today.

The Italian U21 international has struggled to lay down a first team place at Liverpool since his £10million move from Roma last summer.

Borini has picked up numerous injuries and looks to have fallen down the pecking order in the Reds attacking options this summer following the arrival of Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and, this morning, Victor Moses.

The 22-year-old is the fourth piece of business Liverpool have been invovled in today after earlier unveiling the signings of Moses and defenders Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho.

Borini has made 20 appearances for Liverpool’s first team, scoring twice.
