The theory of the majority of climate scientists is that C02 (as well as other gases such as Methane) absorbs IR radiation preventing it from bouncing straight back out into space heating the Earth. However the formulas for the theory that atmospheric gases such as C02 absorbs IR Radiation has only been run on computer simulations and has been disputed by several climatologists. I personally believe that made made emissions of C02 have assisted the warming of the Earth rather than caused it. We are after all still technically in an ice age after all. Our universe isn't a constant. Just like a person it ages, changes, goes through cycles ect. Disclaimer- Science is not my professional calling however I'm a keen follower so if an of my scientific knowledge is incorrect feel free to call me out on it Also whether or not global warming is man made or not our reliance on petroleum to fuel our society will ultimately be our downfall if we don't find alternatives. It is non-renewable so when its gone, it's gone and when it's gone the lorries taking the food to the supermarkets, the fossil fuel power stations, the boats, the planes ect will stop. People will loot and riot to feed themselves and we'd invade any oil rich country and loot them to keep us running ect and our current oil reserves would only last a couple of months at most. It makes the ITER one of the most important scientific projects of all time (how many other projects have potentially stopped worldwide societal collapse?)
