Thing is when have all those clubs ever been in for the same guy? Not to mention the player has hos own preference (Bayern)

I agree a "mature" talent like Lawandowski will choose Barca, Real, Bayern and Manure over us. These teams are European power houses. However, the fact Chelsea will be chosen is down to their financial muscle. We have seen them out muscle teams numerous times, remember Mata, John Obi Mikel, recently Wiliam.

You can flip Wenger's longevity around, and say it shows stability. If I were a prospective player, I would want to play in a stable environment, not one like Chelsea that keeps changing its manager every 5 minutes!

No matter how hard I try, I cannot see how any player will choose Spuds over us. Spuds are operating at their peak, (their peak has not been good enough to overhaul us), whilst it is evident we are coasting along in second gear.... All the ingredients are there, whether we choose to utilise it or not is another thing. Spuds really are at least 8yrs behind us, they can huff and puff all they like!

And yet, Spurs have bought Capoue who looks decent, Paulinho who looks excellent, and Soldado who is probably better than Giroud. All are players who would improve our squad, and even our first-11 in some cases. They have done better than us in the transfer market.

All we have is a manager who says everything is fine after a couple of easy wins over teams who we know can usually play better than that. It's as if the loss to Villa never happened. After all, Wenger blamed it on bad luck, and actually said he was happy with the performance!

When the window closes and the ****storm of the past 8 years returns, we'll be fighting it out for 4th and dropping out of the Cups all over again. That's not even being a pessimist. It happens every year, Wenger has done nothing to change it this time around, and it looks like he won't be doing anything.

Not really. They come for the pay-packet and move to another club when they don't like it anymore. Most players are mercenaries who don't value stability.

Surely we HAVE to buy? Wenger knows that not bringing in reinforcements will cause a ****storm the moment we lose a game and he said something like "it starts now" about buying players after the Fenerbache game and something about "special signings" today. If we fail to bring in quality additions to the squad by September 3rd, I will join you in condemning the manager. Until then, there is still potential for us to have a challenging squad by the end of the window.

I think this discussion is going off in so many different directions. My contention at the onset was that as things currently stand majority of players out there would choose joining us over spuds. Of course spuds have gone about their transfer activity diligently and efficiently. They have added quality to their squad without so much fuss, whilst we have so far chased shadows. Yes we could have done with some of their signings and they would have improved our squad, even the most ardent Wenger supporter will acknowledge this! However, to the best of my knowledge none of these marquee signings have chosen them over us. It is a bit like a rich handsome guy who keeps going after ugly chicks, whilst his poor ugly friend keeps getting the beautiful babes. For us it is just a lack of trying! What can the chicks do if we do not go and ask them out?

Surely this thread should be called: [h=1]Summer Transfer Window, a rumour.[/h]
Here is a poem by T.S.Elliott to keep you all going:
Transfer's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw--
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime--Transfer's not there!

Transfer, Transfer, there's no on like Transfer,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime--Transfer's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air--
But I tell you once and once again, Transfer's not there!

    Transfer's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin;
You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.
    His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly doomed;
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.
    He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake.

Transfer, Transfer, there's no one like Transfer,
For he's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square--
But when a crime's discovered, then Transfer's not there!

He's outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)
And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's.
And when the larder's looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,
Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke's been stifled,
Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair--
Ay, there's the wonder of the thing! Transfer's not there!

And when the Foreign Office finds a Treaty's gone astray,
Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,
There may be a scap of paper in the hall or on the stair--
But it's useless of investigate--Transfer's not there!
And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:
"It must have been Transfer!"--but he's a mile away.
You'll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs,
Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums.

Transfer, Transfer, there's no one like Macacity,
There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.
He always has an alibit, or one or two to spare:
And whatever time the deed took place--TRANSFER WASN'T THERE!
And they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
(I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)
Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time
Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

What worries me is that every time I hear AW speak he tells us he's happy with the quality of the players but believes we are just a little light (squad numbers).
I don't accept that our best 11 players are good enough, they're a highoy talented bunch but not on the level of a Chelsea/Utd/City - yes we know those squads cost over a billion to compile and we won't spend on their level, but 4 sensible additions (CF, DM, GK and a versatile defender) and we could be good enough.
What his comments suggest are that we'll end up with squad reinforcements like Cabaye.
Again, I'll hold off making judgement just yet....

Wenger is a coy operator and tries not to give too much away. If he comes out and says, our first eleven are crap and we need players better than what we've got, not only is it a massive morale sapping statement for our current players, but it means that selling clubs know that we are desperate for quality and they will hold us to ransom for them.

Cabaye isn't 'top quality' but he'd be a decent addition to the squad, so I've no problem with us signing one or two players of his calibre, but we need to find a way to sign players like Di Maria and Benzema without making a massive song and dance about it. The Suarez debacle became that because Liverpool shouted their mouths off about it. Had they have shown some decorum and kept affairs internal, they might not have ended up with a player who was begging to leave.

Had they kept quiet then Suarez would have left but in a peaceful manner. I'd rather angrily keep a player than peacefully see him leave to a team that's 8th in the league.

True about Cabaye, and I also think that often we think we know certain players like Cabaye (or Arteta) for example, who would have known he would be such a crucial element in our midfield? It shows that with better players around them, players can improve at bigger clubs.

They could have just said he's not for sale, and left it at that. But they didn't they first went on about how he's worth as much as Bale, then Arsenal are classless then went public saying Suarez had disgraced the club. Sending out mixed messages all along, which probably reflected their stance on the verbal agreement to allow him to leave if a Champions league club came in for him ... you know, the Champions League club who are 8th until they overtake Liverpool again.

I'd like an unbiased judging panel please. 300+ pages of what players you are going to buy is empirical evidence that you all spout way more **** than any scouser.

I don't disagree with any of that and like you I'm delighted AW (and the club for as long as I can remember) have shown great class in all transfer dealings, in or out.
4 top quality signings is what we need but it seems Di Maria and Benzema aren't that keen on a switch to us, do we no longer have the pulling power needed to attract world class players ? Does this explain why AW has been bargain hunting in recent seasons ?
None of us will ever know I guess and here's hoping this is way off the mark when a host of worldies turn up for training later this week...

People should be bracing themselves for few arrivals. Our outlay will be minimal as always, if we don't make a profit we'll just barely spend more than what we've taken in.

That's not to be negative, just more a case of deja-vu. You can just sense what way this is going to pan out.
