Within the NCFC framework and budget, what midfield player(s) would you like to have seen join in this window? And what would they bring that we don't have already - if utilised correctly?

Thats your opinion robbie and i'm fine with that, football opinions are always going to differ. But for me yesterday Fer and Howson were played in positions that looked to be very new to them, and then we have 2 DM's in the middle, the result looked completely unbalanced. Why did we need both Johnson and Tettey against Hull? 2 players that would struggle to pass the other a cold! Why not leave one of those out and play Fer in center mid, Hoolahan supporting RVW and then Olson left with Redmond Right, all positions covered.

May have looked to you to be very new to them, but as I've pointed out, actually they weren't. I think what you are really saying is that you expected us to play with two wingers. Why would you expect that? There have been several people on here suggesting that we will play differently this year. And even more "demanding" that we play differently from last year. Well, we put out a team to play differently and immediately everybody is up in arms! Everybody should simply calm and down and let CH get on with getting the team playing as he intends them to play this season. If that turns out to be rather different from some people's expectations, so be it. <ok>

I don't have a multimillion pound football clubs scouting system to fall back on.

My priorities would have been based on skillsets around passing THEN a second option of speed.

I don't recall Redmond once receiving the ball past the back four, why? one reason is he never looks to receive it there , the second is because it requires a both an advanced central midfield presence and someone (when I say one I mean at least 2) who can actually pass the ball through players. Absolutely nothing has been done to improve those elements.

I didn't see any tactics to try and pull Hull out because our central midfield just sat still in front of their midfield. Total rubbish, and I don't care what anyone says that comes from the emphasis on rigidity and structure from the manager insisting on the defensively safer option of attacking solely from the wing.

Its is typical of Hughton safety first policy.
    .
I mean, for ****s sake how long did it take to get rid of 2 defensive midfielders, against Hull with about 60% possession. The guy is a total chimp as far as I'm concerned.

Do you all really sit and watch us and think he's got some sort of tactical awareness to change a match? I don't, he's total crap.

I fail to see how that team yesterday were sent out to play differently, that smacked of pretty much every away performance seen under Hughton. We failed to trouble a side that played with 10 men for 60 mins and towards the end it was them who looked more likely to score. No one needs to calm down, yesterday was a shocking display and anyone is well within their rights to be annoyed and dissapointed with it. Why would i like to see 2 wingers? Maybe i would like to see us actually go away from home and try to impose an attacking game on the opposition, We have a 9 million pound striker feeding on scraps and our most creative player on the bench. Maybe we will play Southampton, perform and win the game. Everyone will be happy but lets call yesterday what it was, piss poor and unacceptable by both manager and players.

I'm perfectly calm, but I don't see why anyone has to sit back and watch it unfold and then say he got it wrong OR he got it right.

He didn't put out a team to play differently, if he had, we would have known what to do.

If you could proceed each thumbs up with "hurdy gurdy, flocked knocken" clog boy (sorry Cove) we'll no it's you Dutchy!
seriously though, do you not think that CH changing braders for Snoddy at least 40 minutes before he would like to of made a substitution, a small admission that he got it wrong? I know you have suggested you n CH are excited to see what fer can do and where he can play, but this is a player likened to Vieira or yaya toure. We'll if that's so let's play him where we know he's good the understanding isn't there from preseason to now round pegs for round holes even if the round peg could fit in the square hole due to a compatible circumference. Still not as snug as in the circle!

    Bah!

Back to the OP, I simply cannot believe the question was asked. How many times have we lost to Hull over the years? If we sacked our manager every time we lost to a newly promoted team, how many managers would we have had? Absolutely ridiculous question. I support Norwich because they always have it in them to lose when they maybe shouldn't. If you want to win every game, go and support Man. City. Oh wait...

I'm mildly offended because the last time I wore clogs has to be more than 12 years ago. Looked like these, which are your typical Dutch clogs btw:

oh the question was about hughton, rather than any one of several players that had a bad day at the office. If there is any improvement it will be minimal, the level of expenditure has not suddenly turned Norwich into a world beating team, and any progress will be slow, that is state of play for teams of comparable stature as ourselves.

There are more clogged heads on this board General than there are Dutchmen's feet. Re. Snoddy, if he had been fit he would obviously have played, but the team would have been set up exactly the same, with Snoddy playing narrow. Re. Fer/Yaya Toure, Mancini regularly got a lot of flak for not playing YT in an advanced position; it is widely held that he is at his most effective playing further forward rather than in front of the back four. When Fer says he aspires to be like Yaya Toure, why do you assume he means the withdrawn one rather than the advanced one? Or more precisely, why shouldn't he be played in an advanced role, as YT quite often is? Re. the more general point, if Wenger had listened to that sort of nonsense, Thierry Henry would have spent his entire career as an out-and-out left winger and we'd never have had the pleasure of seeing one of the great central strikers of our time. <ok>

Snods had two days in training last week and therefore wasn't up to starting. Howson WR was out of necessity not some tactical variation. As it was, Snods tired at the end after playing just the half. Olsson is also not match fit so he didn't have the option to play him WL and Redmond WR. It was necessity, not some managerial whim. As for the midfielders, Tettey looked lively getting forward to support the attack and Fer was playing his first PL game. The substitutions were good, IMO, and City did produce 13 chances, 4 of which were on target (Hull had 6 chances, 1 on target - the penalty!). I've given up to rising to Carrabuh's rants of 'shackling players' and 'formulaic rigidity', the latter of which belongs to himself more than anybody else!

Personally I am frustrated that we started with two dm"s and howson out of position against hull. This does smack of a lack of ambition on our part. I feel that once hull were down to 10 that the first thing to do was bring on wes to put his foot on the ball and create something for rvw or Redmond to run on to. I can see where people are looking at the selection and formation and scratching their heads. I appreciate that if several players are not 100 per cent fit then it would be a foolish gamble to play the all but surely the best system is one which suits the players on the park rather than our ideal system if the first 11 are fully fit and available. I am sure we will have better times to come as I do think that we have an improved squad but I do hope that ch applies his resources in a more creative and adventurous manner against the lesser teams in the league.

Why is it a pathetic thread? Surly it's the point of a forum to debate these things? Our PL form since xmas has returned 4 wins in 23 matches and an attitude of surrender when we leave Norwich. 25 million has been spent yet it appears that all that has happened is we have more expensive pegs in the same holes. Seems a perfectly reasonable question to ask how long he has if that trent continues.

    Absolutely right.

I am sick to death of the self appointed forum mafia who leap on anyone who dares offer a point of discussion that differs from their own opinion, like a mediaeval flaming torch carrying mob.

Why on earth is it unreasonable to pose a question about the prospective tenure of our current manager given the abject display yesterday? It's completely missing the point in my opinion to be talking about penalties that were or weren't awarded. The point surely is that Hughton would clearly have been extremely pleased with a 0-0 draw, and given we had about 7 of those last season I don't think anyone could suggest that isn't a fair comment.

I think where the people who have the intelligence to be willing to debate this point are coming from is that Hughton is perhaps applying the same tactics as last season, but with better forward players - in other words, he will hope to nick a few more points by the likes of RvW and Hooper taking chances that Holt/Morison/Jackson/Kamara would have missed.

This, for me, is not a style of play I am happy to see, so in answer to the original question - I would say that 10 games is a reasonable period to judge whether the results AND THE STYLE OF PLAY is acceptable or not.

Excellent post, and thanks to those that have joined the debate.
