He should have taken the free kick from 23-24ish yards out from what I've seen of him on youtube and from how he was playing. Also it's too close for Lambert to get over the wall and back down again I reckon
My man of the match today. Last season he just looked like a promising youngster but today he looked like a first team player, like Shaw did last year.
Agreed, he was immense today! Especially in the deep-lying playmaker role second half. Now ive calmed down and had a chance to think, it's all positives from me from today's game. It was one of those days in terms of finishing chances. 9 out of 10 times we'd have taken all three points today.
So glad to finally see a thread on him. Thought he was fantastic at WBA in a hardworking, sensible role and superb today in an all round performance. Great technicality and exceptional crossing. Also thought Chambers improved drastically from his solid performance last week, much more confident and purposeful this time round
Yep, the second I saw how close to the box it was, I knew Lambert would put it over. Both players hit a dead ball fantastically, but have different techniques that should be used in different situations. JWP has the more Ronaldo-ish technique to get the ball down quicker.
Bloody hell! I'd take Milner to be honest! If he turns out to be half as good as Iniesta I'll be over the moon.
The Head of Analysis at Oxford University said this... "Analysed the Southampton game today. Ward-Prowse is years ahead of others his age. Brilliant talent. Interesting 2nd half from Pochettino!"
A housemate of mine is good friends with his sister. Might try and get a word in to get called up to the team...
Forgot to mention in the matchday thread but yeah, JWP was outstanding today. His set piece delivery looks fantastic and I must admit I've never really seen him as the type of player who can pick out a decent cross, but shows how much I know! That curled cross is going to be a real asset to us this season.
This thread makes for fantastic reading. We have all wondered how our team will be set up and who plays where and it seems all of the competition for places is having a really good effect on the younger players who are rising to the challenge. What amazes me is how good our academy is at producing this talent. Shaw incredibly broke through last season at 17 years old and add to that James Ward-Prowse and Callum Chambers. The comments by the Head of analysis at Oxford University sums it up for me. The future is looking bright, the futures red...........
I meant when he played the right of the 3, when Chambers bombed on and attacked, he would sit a tad deeper and be ready for any potential counter attacks. He has other qualities that make him the player he is but that is just one of them.
What a player. The guy could have had multiple assists if we'd had a bit more luck. I'm feeling a lot better about our creativity now, despite our inability to put chances away so far.
Thought he was about our best player over 90 minutes, with Lovren putting in a similarly important performance. His crossing and free kicks were our major threats today and if Lambert had have been on form my previous criticism of him would have looked even more stupid. He has to play a string of bad games to be dropped now but that said I don't think he is in our best XI. As part of the front 4 he possesses a very good cross, protects the fullback, presses and he can keeps possession well but I feel he limits the effectiveness of the other attackers as he doesn't offer an outlet for an attacking pass, he doesn't possess a good enough attacking pass and he isn't proficient enough at the interplay that we are so good at. In the first half jwp looked the most threatening but I feel that he was also limiting the threat of lallana, and rodriguez, not so much lambert who he fed about 7 good crosses, but he would also benefit from a better attacking option at times. When jwp played in the schneiderlin role we looked much better as a team and I feel this is where he is also best. His high energy harassment and short accurate passes are at home here. It takes away crossing from his game but in the second half ramirez put in a good cross to lambert, and osvaldo put in a brilliant cross to rodriguez so we still were a threat from crosses. He needs to bulk up and I feel he is too slow on the ball to really challenge wanyama, schneiderlin or cork in this position but he is a more than adequate back up. Osvaldo, Ramirez, Lambert, Lallana, and Rodriguez are all much better players and will assert their superiority as the season progresses if they are indeed superior.
Have to ssay I thought he was awesome particularly in the second half. Best tribute I can pay is that we didnt miss Morgan!
That is all right for you but all I got in the second half was a constant refrain of "I don't understand Morgan being taken off we aren't that good without him." but personally I don't think her comments were anything to do with football.
Agree that JWP was our MOM yesterday and think he will be even better when Clyne returns to RB as he will have him on the overlap and won't have to keep such an eye on the man behind him as Clyny is more experienced and (at the moment) better than Chambers.
