Anotherwat, I completely agree with you on this point: I've long held that supercars are fine for looking at, whether they are alongside you on the M40, on a stand at a motor show, or on Top Gear being salivated over by Clarkson. But as for driving them, unles you have access to a track or various unrestricted roads across Europe and a clear stretch, you'll never get the buzz from them that you expect, and so they are ultimately doomed to be disappointing. I know the ones I've driven in the past (Ferraris, Porsches, and a Maserati or two) made me so aware of the value that even had I the opportunity to open them up, I wouldn't do so for fear of screwing up. However, a decent small hatch with a small engine that allows you to drive closer to the car's limits and stay roughly within eyesight of the legal limits gives you the kind of excitement that is missing when you are driving a £150k sportscar at 70mph. I've always owned smaller cars, and can't see me owning anything else (the wife's car is a people carrier, which doesn't really give you any buzz at any speed...). The ultimate best cars to drive, however (according to QPR fan Bill Bailey) is a hire car. Nothing handles quite like a hire car. And I heartily concur....
Too right about small cars being a lot of fun to take to the limit, same goes for motorcycles. A FIAT Abarth 695 SS on the climb to Passo della Consuma which I used to cycle up most weekends many years ago:
Queens, I'm not going to lambast you for not keeping this thread going in my absence like you said you would........... ..............If you tell me how you got on in that Scooby run!
Mate, I was actually thinking about this thread the other day after you popped up and wondered if youd forgotten or not !!! sorry mate, just could find the energy !! As for the scooby run it got cancelled because of other issues, but I stil have the voucher and about 3 months left to do it. Wont be this weekend as i'm in Melbourne for the game, but think I may have to re-book it now things have settled down !
Just had to spend a bag of sand on my Saab on bits but I love it still it: and hold my own if it comes to power: For 3-4K you have a classic car that still performs in its basic form with a modern M5: There is simply no better car for the money or kudos ... it seriously ****s me up every day i drive it and I paid £1050 for my current one and spend 2K or more on it you have a real rocket
DT..for 3-5 grand you should have bought a mint Nissan300zx ( as I did). Best looking car on the planet and goes like hell for 5K. It took me ages to get mine but I loved it..Until it broke down of course !! F the saabs and beamers...all rep mobiles !
Oddball and Queens, what's the motor tax situation like in Oz and UK? We're totally screwed here in IRL if you drive anything with a half-way decent amount of power.
I would take the pepsi challenge against a Nissan or any Subaru ... The turbo unit as standard on the Saab is the exact same as the Mitsubishi. Saabs aren't rep mobiles in the UK and after 02 they stopped making them
Mime is full lot and so is Mrs DT as he has a 2002 M3 ( which by her admission is not as quick as my saab ... well its quicker from a stand still but after 50 mph it's the saab)
get yourself a nice 300ZX mate..put some decent rims on and it looks quality..! Saab are dead mate..good luck finding spare parts in a few years !!
No problem re parts as loads of place spouting up as they were possible the last proper car made ... pre vauxhall that is
You don't know how good you have it brother. Tax on a pre-08 two liter car over here for example, would be £605. A three liter would set you back a mind-boggling £1,529! P.S. Oddball, what's that Motor you've posted above?
Swords currently have had a VW golf for third week in France .... TDi Life Model ... I still have 370Km of fuel This is the best modern car I have driven.
