I like how you make your own insurance policy of saying Arsenal will sign players, but maybe not the calibre players we want. So by the end of the transfer, if our signings are Sanago, Perez, and that Moroccan, you'll be like hey we did sign players.

It's not only about signing players, but signing QUALITY players who will improve the squad, so don't get it twisted.

He's still going on about it? The fact that he won't attempt discussing it without first distorting my position is proof enough that this is just grandstanding on his part. afcftw: AFC supporter master race.

He calls it whining. I've never even said anything about the club in general or the coming season, just said the club has been incompetent this transfer window. 1 week prior to league start looking at our squad depth. Then look at the club representatives' grandiose announcements for one, and the effect on the fanbase. Competence... right.

Erm, so yeah....I made this thread on July 17th, and we're now 2 days away from the league, and STILL no business done.

Here's my "should I be worried?" test.

Scenario: Arteta is out injured.

Can you come up with a single (non-experimental) midfield setup, out of the players left, with which the prospect of facing a non-trivial opponent doesn't terrify you?

(well 'terrify' is exaggerated but you get the point)

Looks like my test doesn't even need the "non-trivial opponent" qualifier.

We need a DM for any combination of midfield which doesn't include Arteta... simples. Ramsey and Wilshere simply don't have the intelligence to do a professional foul, as an example, when needed to avert a possibly more dangerous situation.

We were so dependent on the man last season, as was shown in January when he was out.

When you look at the business saints have done this window I believe out of the 3 signings we've made all 3 of them would not of only improved arsenals squad but your starting 11. Which is why I am shocked at the lack of business.

Out of the supposed big 4 I have a soft spot for arsenal even if you do buy our youn talented players and some how make them worse. I personally believe those days are over though and can see saints challenging for top 6 in a few seasons time.

We aren't so desperate that we are now jealous of southampton....

And no the signings you have made would not improve our first team. In fact none of them would make the first team.

Sorry mate but my brother is a diehard celtic fan and recons they have robbed you for wanyama, extremely clumsy and inconsistent were the word he used to describe him. Could improve as he is young, but still think most people are vastly over rating him.

I agree with this assessment of Arteta. I have been saying we need an Arteta replacement/backup all pre-season and I still think this is the case. I have to admit I honestly don't know how to go about picking this player though, as I don't know how Wenger arrived at Arteta in the first place. He is hardly a typical deep lying midfielder.

He obviously read my article from August 2011: http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/78340-Arsenal-Raid-Everton
You might want to ignore the bit about Heitinga, though... <whistle>

Well, my hats off to you then, or it might have been just a lucky guess? :) Anyway, I think this is one of the problems Wenger has. He has been pulling rabbits out of a hat in the transfer market so much that fans have come to expert that signings = success.

Other teams fans probably expect a little less from new signings, maybe even a lot less outside the very rich clubs. I think Wenger is a little more realistic. He knows that even if he signs players and spends 100M, if they don't win, he has just delayed the inevitable.

I do think he is trying to make the "Best" signings and not just get any old player in. It is compounded by high demand and low supply right now, but I do think fans need to appreciate that finding another Arteta that wants to come to Arsenal, isn't the easiest thing in the world. Gustavo chose to stay in Germany, where he would not be playing second fiddle to Arteta.
