Fair enough mate, I wasn't attempting to devalue our criticise your opinion, just curious as to how you'd reached it, cheers
all this, and also, he clearly doesn't want to be with us. Any move would be self serving, and looking to move on quicker than would help us. Contrast his attitude to the 'norwich project' with toby and his dad's. They spoke about it with respect for what we're trying to do, and a genuine sense that they thought we were doing it the right way.
Wrote a bit on this on my blog this afternoon: The Toivonen situation For weeks the transfer rumours about Toivonen kept the fans in Norwich City busy. Is he, or is he not going to sign a contract with the club. One day it's a done deal, the next day Toivonen snubs another offer, and today... Thijs Slegers of Voetbal International reports that Toivonen is still open to a transfer to Norwich City. He is just taking things 'slow'. With things already going on for four weeks you can say that that a sloth is slower with making a move. According to the article, Toivonen is in no hurry to sign a deal. Norwich and PSV already agreed on a 5.7 million Euro transfer fee but the Swedish International is waiting for a bigger club to show interest, stalling the Norwich deal for the time being. Problem for him is that he may have a month left on this open season of the transfer market, but if he wait too long, he might end up with nothing. PSV have given Toivonen two options: either transfer to a new club this summer or sign an extension on the contract. If he refuses to do either, PSV will kick him out of the squad and he won't play a game this season. And he'll depart as a free agent next year. please log in to view this image I need this bit more time Norwich... Something similar to this situation Toivonen is in happened to Ajax top earner Miralem Sulejmani. Ajax bought the talented left winger for a whopping 16 and a half million Euro's in 2008 from SC Heerenveen. Till today the biggest internal transfer for the Eredivisie. Last year Sulejmani's contract was also due for extension, Ajax either had to sell him or extend his contract with a big pay cut as Sulejmani failed to deliver on expectations, rather all of the expectations for that kind of money. The Serbian international refused to sign a new deal and so the club decided Sulejmani didn't play a single game. In May Sulejmani's agent announced the player signed a deal with Benfica as a free agent. 16.5 million Euro's + millions in wages evaporated for Ajax in five years. Now Ola Toivonen is not on exorbitant wages as Sulejmani was, but he has cost the club a couple of millions in wages and around 4 million euro's in transfer fees to Malmö FF. Toivonen has probably seen what happened with Sulejmani, and could be bluffing and sit a year waiting for a better club. It worked for Sulejmani it could work for him. It's too bad the fans and the clubs suffer the most from these kinds of situations.
Thank you Battersea and RBF, you have put it more eloquently than me but that is the essence of my position. We do better with a cohesive squad that does not lend itself to people who unsettle everyone around them. Most of our team appreciates the fans (as already Fer has mentioned for the away support at Brighton) and that is the type of player that we thrive on. I am sure that DM and CH will have factored this in to their thinking.
Out ward bound news: I hope they make him an offer and he gets regular football. Good luck, Barney, if you are about to leave us
makes him look like a bit of an arsehole really. Plenty of players respect their club enough to sign new deals before seeking a move to give their old club a better negotiating position, so this sort of douchebaggery isn't an inevitability.
Latest twitter rumours saying Tottenham are in for Toby now. If this is true cant see him choosing us over them tbh, but who knows? CH & DM have worked wonders in convincing redmond & hooper so maybe they can work their miracle for a third time?
Alderweireld is a goner for Norwich, to put it bluntly. He will sign an extension rather than signing for the Canaries. Sorry to put it so bluntly but that's the situation Alderweireld is in right now. I can see him signing an extension as he grew up and developed at Ajax.
Much as I think Toivonen would be a good fit playing wise, I'm also concerned that this sort of attitude could seriously affect the dressing-room spirit of the City team (it can't be doing PSV any favours, either).
I think you may well be right about Alderweireld, Cove, especially being much closer to the dynamics of the situation. But then you did also say that Leroy Fer would stay at FC Twente.
Well, everyone was a bit in shock here when that happened. It's a good move for him, but in all honesty, we all thought he was more on his way to Everton and if that didn't happen, he would stay at Twente. Caught us all by surprise.
To me it seems like Toivonen has always seen us as a fall back option. Right from the get go he's been reluctant to actually say yes he wants to play for us, and it seems like he's been holding out for a better offer or bigger club to come in for him once our interest was made public and it was known he was definitely looking for a move. Much the same way that Liverpool showed interest in Toby after we did and there were rumours of Spurs looking at Hooper after our bids in January. Now that no better offer has been put forward and no bigger clubs have shown an interest he's realised he has two options. Option on is to sit and rot in the PSV reserves for the season and then move on a free next summer, a scenario that would mean no proper game time and losing out on all the signing on fees and bonuses that come with a big money transfer. Option two is to decide he may be interested in coming to Norwich after all, not really because he wants to but because we're the only ones who have shown a definite interest. If this is the case, then we're definitely better off without him. We need players at the club who want to play for us, not players who only want to come here because they didn't get the offer they were expecting
I don't mind us being second choice to a bigger club if the player wants to use us as a stepping stone. They will still play their hearts out because they will want to impress and get noticed.
First I've heard of this: http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-n...er-rubbishes-crystal-palace-and-norwich-link? Granted, it's TalkS***e.
i think people need to get over themselves. no player signs for a club if they don't really want to be there! if toivonen signs (i don't think he will - i think we've moved on to other targets - but say he did) it's because he decided norwich was the right place to play his football. of course, if for example liverpool came in for him he'd prefer to go there, but likewise, so would van wolfswinkel or fer or any of our current players! most footballers want to better themselves, progress and ultimately win things while making the most money they can along the way. people shouldn't take it so personally if a player isn't immediately impressed and willing to jump at the chance to sign for norwich. we are not well known on the continent. we've recently been as low as the third tier of english football. anyone we approach will have been informed of that fact. any proven, champions league player is going to have misgivings about dropping (and it is a drop) to norwich. the main draw we have is we open the door to the premier league. that worked for hooper but not every player will be impressed by that. this all applies to toby alderweireld as well
Speaking for myself Super, it´s not a question of whether he wants us, but that some of us don´t want him, nothing wrong in having that opinion. I can think of a whole list of players that for one reason or another I wouldn´t want to see playing for us, and very little of it has to do with their playing ability, in fact it´s often those who play best who have the worst reputation. I remember you being particularly vehement when talk is of Suarez for ex. and it´s always a gamble, do you take someone with blinding talent but with a few warts in the closet as well, or do you opt out. I know there´s no direct parallel between Toivonen and Suarez, but the principle is the same. Fortunately as you say, it´s probably unlikely that he´ll come now anyway, but it´s still an interesting point of debate.
Bournemouth apparently want Surman. I wouldn't be overly disappointed if he goes, same with Fox really. Do like Bournemouth though, hope they have a good season.
