Must remember to be grateful for all this sun, despite the fact that my skin is dry-roasted, my eyes itch all the time and I can't sleep without opening my window for the bumblebees nesting right outside.

Baseball hats are a waste of time in the sun as they don't protect you ears.

Old gits get skin cancer on the top of their ears because of short back and sides hair cuts of their youth.

Women get skin cancer around the top of where they would have worn their bobby socks.

Skin cancer is a really serious issue and you should use sun block cream or stay out of the sun.

I went to Crete and got a gentle tan without going in the direct sun but I had the very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov to look after me.

Anyone who gets sunburned is as stupid as people who still smoke or drink excessively. How many times do you have to be told FFS?

Well, the risk of skin cancer from too much sun is considerably lower than the risk of getting ill from smoking or drinking excessively, and if you try to cut all the risk out of your life then you're not going to have any fun. Getting a bit burnt a couple of days out of the year isn't going to hurt anyone. If you spend your entire adult life working an outdoor job in Texas, then yeah, that's a risk worth worrying about.

I think you may need to reappraise that opinion based on current evidence. I have it on good authority that hospital dermatology units are having to put the majority of their resources into dealing with the phenomenal rise in cases of skin cancer. Even my tough macho Australian friends take care to protect their skin.

You could also say that drinking or smoking excessively a couple days out of the year isn't really going to hurt anyone, it's if you spend your entire adult life doing it when there's a risk. :p

Fair point, though I doubt you could down a litre of vodka in one sitting and live to tell the tale; and of course if you smoke excessively one day, you're probably addicted and will do it the rest of the days too.

Well the only way to get really scientific about this is to test obviously, so tomorrow I'll go and lie in the park all afternoon and you down a litre of vodka and smoke 5 packs of cigarettes. Obviously we'd do it the other way around but I'm sure you couldn't hack the former with your sissy wissy 'hayfever'.

Meet back here this time tomorrow for the results!

Well I have drunk half a bottle of scotch this evening and am just about standing. Does that count.

I actually have a litre bottle of Absolut right in front of me, so if I'm gonna die tomorrow at least it'll be good quality vodka.

Weird. Couple of days after we had a new fastest Brit not called Linford Christie as well.

.

linford Christie is a drug cheat as well, although you wouldn't know it from the way the BBC fawn over him. Should be stripped of all his records and titles cheating barsteward.

Christie's is an odd one, didn't he fail in the late 90s when he was long retired and came back for one race for a bet?

Drugs were (and possibly still are) the norm at the highest level. I think six or seven of the eight guys in the 1988 Olympic 100m final tested positive for something at some stage. I want to believe that Usain Bolt is a freak of nature and his times are down to a unique technique and physique but I wonder if it's naive to believe that? I mean a few years ago people lauded Lance Armstrong for staying clean and beating all the guys who were doping and we all know how that turned out...
