Derby fan in my office mentioned this about Sammon and found it hilarious. I pointed out he wasn't good enough for the PL and he said he wasn't good enough for the Championship, and would possibly struggle in L1...

Sammon being linked really is bad reporting.
Cole, I don't get all the negative comments.
He is a free, he has played in the Prem for the majority of his career.
As an addition to the squad, he is better than what we have at the minute (McClean/Prossie defo).
He has a point to prove after being released.
Wages wouldn't be too high, but would he come this far up north.
Worth giving him a chance, if he can rediscover the form that got him 7 England caps we would be laughing.

I've decided to undertake some research...

For some reason, I had in my mind, that Carlton Cole would be on MEGA money.

My logic? He is English and has played for the senior team a couple of times. This generated a season or two of hype around him, and therefore made me think he would be on an amount of money disproportionate to his actual ability and worth.

I have since discovered, however, that maybe he wasn't on THAT much after all.

My source? The Daily Mail (stop laughing...)

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2147407/Carlton-Cole-took-50-pay-cut-stay-West-Ham.html

It seems when West Ham went down a couple of seasons back, he had his wages halved from £28k a week to £14k a week.

Then, they got promoted again, so they went back to his original level. (See the article linked in for details of his heroic loyalty in the face of this ruthless salary slash).

So, it is perhaps fair to assume (subject to having no further pay-rise or The Daily Mail being wrong, which I think we all know it won't be) that when he was DUMPED and DENIED a new deal this summer, he was probably losing a £28k a week contract.

This, for a proven Premiership larker, isn't enormous...is it?

Would we go to £30k-ish a week for our top earners?

    I don't know.

So maybe the only hurdle in getting Cole here (if indeed he is a genuine target) would be the move up north? I don't know how possible it would be to make him consider it. £40k a week? If so...DO ONE, CARLTON!

Personally, I think he'd be a good signing, if affordable, what with his Premiership experience and physical presence, though I do have to say I don't think he scores enough goals.

Right, that's me done for the day...

    Discuss.

Stupid as it sounds, I think you may have put your finger on it. Which would just show what a bag o'shyte most of these journalists are. First one gets it wrong and the rest all copy.

Surely we can't really be looking at Conor Sammon, we'd be better with Charlie Austin even in a wheelchair!

It might be the Irish link; he's had a call up to the Ireland squad and played in a few recent games for them, so with all our other Irish players perhaps this is the link.

Thing is, I don't rate Connor Wickham highly either, he just looks clumsy. His goal scoring record for Sunderland is 1 in 26. I get the feeling Sunderland thought he's one of those "He's 18 and scoring goals therefore he must be amazing" players. Sunderland shelled out £8m (£12m with add ons) for him, which isn't looking like a very good investment.

Maybe we should play Max Clark against Chelsea, then wait for a £20m bid to come in from one of the title challengers.

Conor Sammon is a grafter. Bruce loves grafters. Sadly I think we will go for him however 2 million is much too much for a player worse than what we have already. He looked ****e for Derby but has looked pretty decent for Ireland. Personally I think we are getting desperate as we put all our eggs into one basket. I also think we are targeting Sammon because we really want Palacios and we couldnt afford a 4 - 5 million quid strike and Palacios.

If we could get Cole(which I still think is unlikely), on a free and at £25k a week, then we'd be mad not to.

Stick Le Fondre alongside him(for £2m odd) and I think we'd have a decent partnership.

Why is every saying we should sign Cole. He has never lived up to his potential besides I doubt he would move north. Personally I think we should be looking at digging up a gem from abroad on the cheap. Just like how Swansea did with Michu and Bruce did previously at other clubs.

    Little known FACT;

Connor is the son of the SNP leader Alex.

You can impress your mates down the boozer with that one, courtesy of The Don!!

You can impress them even more by informing them that Sammon (Connor) and Salmond (Alex) are surnames that are homonyms and belong to the homophone subcategory. This will also dispel any suggestion of any kinship whatsoever between the two.

To be fair I have found it surprising that Clark has not been given a chance on the bench/in cup games seeing as though he has played for England and is supposedly on the radar of a few top clubs

I remember Carlton Cole putting in a sterling performance against us. Big, strong, can hold the ball and has decent touch. Surely the perfect foil for a Le Fondre, Aluko etc.

Didn't Cole whinge before he transferred to West Ham from Chelsea? And there's about 6 stops East on the Hammersmith Line between them.

I can't see him wanting to move up North if that's the case.

Never, Cole/Aluko with Le Fondre to come off for impact.

Aluko is streets ahead of Le Fondre.

    Not sure if you're trying to get lemon so all I'll say are these two words;

    Angelina Jolie and John Voight.

I rest my case your honour.

I had Aluko playing behind the pair of them, but I'm equally happy to go with your suggestion.
