I'm surprised more people haven't been reeled in... I can sense the TENCHion...

Coat.

Villain. Always sold our best players to line his own pocket. That's the big difference between now and then. We are no longer a selling club.

Both.

Led the club during some our best years and for all the criticism on this and the transfer thread his shrewd off-field investments were the springboard to us having our current rather swanky stadium and facilities at Colney.

Balanced against this he presided over our gradual decline by not investing in the squad to replace the players we sold.

Personally I don't think it is fair to criticise him for sanctioning the sale of our players from that era as in truth we were a selling club and any significant offer he took kept the club running. At the time nobody could say for certain where the Sky money was going and how long it would last and so whilst as a fan I was gutted when MoN left us over the Windass transfer as someone has has run businesses I can underatand his priority in investing surplus funds into land and bricks and mortar which do not age, devalue, get injured or lose form

Sadly Robert Chase was neither a saint nor a pantomine villain he fell in with the rest of us somewhere between the two, making both good and bad decisions. I am convinced that he loved the club and acted in what he perceived to be the club's best interests even if this is contrary to what many of us felt were the right decisions at the time. At least he put his money where his mouth was and stuck his head above the parapit - I remeber being hugely resentful of him at the time but as I have got older and faced some tough business decisons myself I have more sympathy for him than I had.

That said I'm really glad we have our current board and executive team in place and the Chase era is consigned to history.

And even if we were, McNally has and would ensure transparency with the fanbase, and make any proceeds available for the manager to strengthen adequately, not build a new wing on Halvergate Hall <yikes>

Chase absolute git, police horses in Carrow Road just because we chanted to get him out

Remember singing All we want is another Chairman in the Barclay to Ace of Bass

No coincidence that Carters, the builders always won the "tenders" when any ground improvements were required <whistle>

Yes, Carters did ALL the rebuilding of Carrow Road, SEVEN contracts in all, of which only THREE were entered into under Chase's chairmanship. The most recent contracts were entered into in 2004 and 2008.

Carter's were also heavily involved in the building of the university, being the only local company with the capability of undertaking the task.

One of the reason's why I do not think it worth contributing to a thread like this or even opening the thread, is because the matter cannot be properly debated when so little attention is paid to so many relevant facts. What is needed is for someone with no axe to grind either way to write a book about the Chase years, in the context of what preceded them, the inauguration of the Premier League and the subsequent radical effect on football finance, NCFC's financial situation before then and subsequently, Robert Chase's assessment of the implications of the PL for English football in general and NCFC in particular, and how he believed NCFC could best be positioned in the very different circumstances the club faced. Unless and until someone undertakes to write such a book, the truth will continue to be buried under half-truths and populist fiction. <ok>
