is this the greatest time to be a Canary supporter? i just remember 1959, and Saunders era is right up there, but i doubt we have ever had a higher profile. the days of signing Brelier etc are so far behind us that they may be forgotten for ever. PLEASE!!!!

Its up there, 10points clear at the top in the PL under Mike Walker and when we beat Bayern M was pretty good too (sorry too young to remember the Saunders era). Though now whilst we may never win the league there is a special feeling knowing how well we are being run, by good people (not that clown Chase or Doomcaster) and signing players that we could only ever of dreamt of! If not the best then its blommin well close.

    Bah!

I'm not saying I expect it but Swansea and Wigan have shown clubs like ours can win trophies and play in Europe.
I'm too young to remember us in Europe but I'd love the chance to follow the boys abroad.

And to think that just over four years ago we had our lowest divisional status in 50 years! It's a funny old game, isn't it?

Funny that what you consider to be the highpoints in your lifetime so far -- "10points clear at the top in the PL under Mike Walker and when we beat Bayern M was pretty good too" -- both occurred when we were apparently being run by "a clown". Robert Chase was on the club board from 1982 until he resigned in 1996, and for 10 of those years was chairman, the most successful the club has ever known. The fact that it ended as it did should not obscure the fantastic job he did over more than a decade (which was why he was rightly elected later to the NCFC Hall of Fame). To refer to him as "a clown" is a travesty, both of the man and the truth. <ok>

To entice Martin O'Neill to the club as manager - and then force the guy out for the sake of £500k to sign Dean Windass is clownery, buffoonery, stupidity.....you choose which.

"Forced the guy out"? There was no need for O'Neill to leave (any more than there was a need for him to leave Aston Villa when Randy Lerner said enough was enough). The truth is more complicated and less comfortable than the myth. However, this is not the place to pursue it. <ok>

I have to agree he was at the helm for some of our greatest times but as CC remarks he did some bloomin stupid stuff too. I think travesty may be OTT its probably more of a minor disservice. Never the less he sat at the helm at the start of the PL and thought small and arguable caused the slow decline until McNasty was brought in to save us. For all the good of that era there is bad too. I guess its much easier to remeber the vitriol in the ground being collectively directed at him as we declined, than the good before it.
For all the good during his tenure, during the decline I think he did more than enough to deserve the moniker!(And I reckon so did 20000 others during that decline they were certainly shouting plenty of things which weren't gratitude!)

    Bah!

Robbie, you are entitled to your opinion but I would love to know your take on the "Chris Sutton will be here next season" lie after the lad had already been sold! We've all laughed at the picture of Sutton giving him that look!

Selling Ashley Ward without telling the guy <yikes>
Buying a derelict flour mill rather than players ?
Selling Chris Sutton for £5m - and buying Mike Sheron for £500k as a "replacement" <doh>

My abiding memory is lines of police horses galloping up and down Carrow Road to break up a noisy demo of livid supporters - don't try and tell me each and every one of them was wrong!

I'm saying no more on the subject, we have too many new Dutch and Belgian fish to fry.
    Hopefully <ok>

Managers, chairmen, directors and players lie all the time when it comes to transfers. It's pretty standard.

Ok, but what about his Chris Sutton promise that he reneged on? "if he's not here at the start of next season then neither will I be" wasn't it? How do you explain that one? (not that you've explained the MON one, I'm pretty sure the Windass saga was pivotal in that)

Yes, he was chairman during some of our greatest ever adventures, but the selling of our crown jewels when we were at the strongest we'd ever been and when the Sky money was starting to pour into the game, only to replace them with far inferior players from the bargain bucket such as Mike Sheron, Ashley Ward etc almost destroyed our club at a time when we should have been pushing on and strengthening - and it has taken almost twenty years and a magician called McNally for us to recover.

Sorry, this is the transfer thread so I should shut up now - particularly as my blood is starting to boil at the mere thought of the fat controller <steam>

Edit: only just seen Dave and Cromer's responses - great minds and all that <ok>

from what I remember with out Robert Chase Norwich City would not be here now talking about these transfers and players, without the business sense he had to buy all the land around Carrow road we would have gone in to administration if we hadn't been able to sell and develope the land from Riverside to Morrison's

as the robert chase era is a seriously heated debate, can i suggest making a separate thread for it as i can see this transfer thread getting completely blown out of the water?* i'd love to make a few comments but this could go on and on and on!

back to transfers, the club have confirmed martin olsson <ok>

*not that i'm trying to tell anyone where they can or can't post - just think it will go a bit crazy!!

Agree this is not the place for this debate (but in my defence I didn't start it). I can't though resist pointing out that your "and all that" conceals "...... fools seldom differ" <laugh> <ok>

Maybe you could do a 'mail merge' with the last page and a half of the transfer sticky thread :emoticon-0105-wink:
