think they'll be shell shocked at first but reckon Paolo will have them conditioned. They'll just need to get their head round it. Paolo will have them watching dvds for that. Paolo is so anal that they've got the best chance possible of hitting the ground running.

Italy's famous pink sport newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport today run with a headline on page 5 saying, in English, 'Goodbye, Giaccherini'. The newspaper claim the Italian international is now almost a Sunderland player and that Paolo Di Canio has been instrumental in securing the signing of the player from Juventus.

He's 28 and has been at the Turin club for a couple of seasons, before that he spent most of his career on loan to various sides around Italy. The arrival of new players at the Serie A champions means Giaccherini will get less chances and he'll still have a big hope of making Italy's World Cup squad. He managed 17 Serie A appearances last year as Juventus stormed to the title but 7 of those were as a substitute and he'll no doubt think that a move to Sunderland and playing every week can only help a dream of being in Brazil next summer.

Money will have helped too, reports in Italy and in England, through The Mirror, claim that the player has been offered around double his salary to move to Sunderland as the Premier League club continue rebuilding ahead of next season.

Gazzetta say he is a step away from making the move complete and Juventus are already looking at possible replacements for Giaccherini, who can play on either wing or more central, he's a versatile player who Juventus will miss.

The Italian was part of his country's Confederations Cup squad and featured in every game, starting the match against Spain. He'll know he needs to keep himself playing if he's still to be so involved with the national set-up next summer.

Sounds like an exciting signing for Sunderland, and Gazzetta reckon he'll only cost around €8m, which is a lot less than the reports in England are saying.

I literally am like a cat on a hot bricks and after getting made redundant last december and no longer sitting in front of a computer all day its torture only checking my phone when I've put the tools down for 5 mins... ellis is putting his money where his mouth is and this summer is a massive statement of intent.. im more excited than I've ever been as a sunderland fan..

This really wouldbe a 'look what's happening at Sunderland' signing.

Akin to when we signed Gyan after a grand World Cup, Giacc was stand out in the Confed and is a full and almost first choice for Italy.

This is the kind of signing that starts the 'next level', if we pull this off, then other players who may seem out of reach suddenly start to think 'somethings happening there'.

This is very similar to what them up the road did under Hall, in simple terms, but we will see, I still can't comprehend that this one happens yet.

If ellis, de fanti, and pdc can convince the lad that we are a club on the up, who want to be playing european football and he is going to be starting 11, then there is no reason we can't attract players of his calibre. We have facilities that rival those of all the top european teams. The biggest problem I believe we've had in the past is convincing players about our commitment to advancement. PDC is one of us in that he's fanatical and passionate and ellis appears to have bought into the love affair we all have with safc the club and not just safc the business. I still think that the italian lad will be ours but I don't think he'll be the biggest signing this summer. Damiao rumours could have legs.

    Totally mate.

All this 'sleeping giant' and such is bollocks, footballers need to see the club has vision, has plans, has ambition.

Even an outside of the box gamble employing Di Canio is a marker that the club is determined to change direction, seldom few club owners would even contemplate employing such a wild card as Paolo, that alone, well, we all seen it straight away, the lift in profile, suddenly there's a Sunderland story every single day.

We are trying, after years of looking the part and threatening to try it, we are trying it.

We might fail, but we might just get there, if this club gets towards the top 6, it will be very, very tough for that progress to be curtailed.

Look at Swansea £12 m for Boney, Palace and Norwich are spending, the money is there so why not spend it ?, but David Villa for £4.5 m ! to Atletico Madrid.

I do a lot of business with a guy in Modena, born up near Turin he's a Juventus supporter. I spoke with him this afternoon and he still tries to make me cry about Paul Pogba every time we speak, although it doesn't work because I just never bought into him as a player in England. Anyhow... on your behalf I asked him about this Giaccherini bloke, whether he's all he's cracked up to be. His response to me was that he was neither happy nor bothered to see him leave but if he had the choice he'd rather hang on to him, because he's useful for specific games, although he conceded that would be a luxury for Juve and the player probably wouldn't want to stay under those conditions. He said Conte undervalued him and used him here and there last season, and he reckons Conte has ditched him from his plans as he tries to make sure Tevez gets the best supply. I told him Tevez would likely leave after a few weeks and go awol for a few months and he just said he'd rather see a youngster given a chance if they can get 10m Euro for Giaccherini, he said Italian fans are scared of the tax man and it's nicer to have the money than a big squad (He mentioned on a business note that some businesses are having to produce profit and loss figures to their banks on a DAILY basis!!! That's so the banks don't extend any credit lines to businesses in trouble).

I said that you lot were going on about how good he was at the confed cup, and he said that Diamanti was probably Italy's best player in the competition, I think he means Diamanti is usually crap but I'm not sure! Promisingly though he did say that he's an explosive type of player, can be frustrating (like all flair players?) but given the confidence he reckons the English league would be much better for his style.

He's not the most enthusiastic of blokes, I think we pushed about 250,000 Euro his way last year and his Christmas card to us was a generic picture of a robin. We went to a restaurant in Milan, must have been £250 a head and he sat there watching a Juve game on his phone, totally uninterested in the posh grub being served up, but he really loves football. He said he'll try and watch a bit of Sunderland if possible this season to see how things go. He also said that all Italians know of Sunderland now, he asked if you were like a new Anzhi Makhachkala, I just told him it probably colder in Sunderland.

To be fair, he has no more knowledge of this than me. I watched the Confed cup and he was Italys best player. He is also contradicting a lot of Juventus supporters who are taking to forums expressing their displeasure at the potential sale of Giaccherini.

To be honest terry and you kind of angled into it.... I just think your friend is a miserable bastard <ok>

Haha he's not my friend, if he was my friend he'd cut me more slack.

I don't think he was implying that that you're not qualified to judge because you're not Italian by the way, was just his answer. Next time I speak to him I'll tell him he's a **** from you 83.

    Wish I'd not bothered now!

How are you Big Gun? I bet you've been to Stadio Delle Alpi a few times ain't ya, filled in a few firms on your own and that. Shame it's 5 minutes til I go home and smash my bird in with a set of woods, could have been your next good mate on here.

On a serious note, I didn't watch any of Confed cup really, so you lot have more knowledge than me I'll tell him he's a nugget, although Italians look at football differently, maybe he just appreciated what...**** it, I don't care.

    Ciao.
