On the subject of 'hard lads', does anyone on here remember the McMurrays? I knew Alec (met him through a mate who lived near Alec's girlfriend).

He was a hard case, but always OK with me. Mind you, he had some scary stories!

Ray Harvey...always got on ok with Ray... Think he was the first black person I ever saw with tattoos on...lots of urban myths spring up about Ray and some stuff best forgotten...he was older then me he sort of adopted me, i use to go upstairs in Haworth arms with him on a Friday , Saturday night , I was one of the few skinheads that went up there . Usually full of hippy types and the odd hells angel. Also the first heroin user I ever knew from hull called Floyd. I'm sure I once saw an early hawkwind play in brickhouse club in hull town centre once but maybe not..Genesis P Orridge was a wierd one in Hull as well..use to live down dagger lane and once asked me if I wanted to errr well you can guess with his girlfriend while he watched...lol....no I didn't...ray once told me his dog would be always with him as he ate it but knowing ray it might not have been true..

I do remember how King Arthur was the only tattooist in Hull for some years ..though not sure if I should say why...

Anyway...Ray was ok....but others might think different.

Things sure have changed . It was rare to see a woman with tattoos on ,

Though you might have spotted one or two in the Earle.

What happened to Johnny Fairkettle, no doubt I spelt his name wrong.

There was some nutters in Hull going back in time..

Johnny Thirkettle committed suicide whilst on remand a few years ago. Got caught with a massive load of drugs and would have down for a long time.
Knew him and Ray Harvey from back in the mid 1960s. Ray wasn't that hard compared to proper hard men, just had the appearance and was an unusual sight, being black, at the time.
Ray would have been surprised to find out I am supposedly a racist according to that ****wit Stanistheman.

If he has a brother called Trev? , Then i knew then both, My dad did time with Trev<whistle> Used to see Trev's brother from time to time and story's would be told to us kids about those days and both had reputations , But as kids we never saw it and can say Trev snr was always a really nice guy. With living on Spring Bank as a kid we used to hang around with trevs kids, and tell you what "there mum was fit as fook" To us kids and we would always say to McMurrays jrs that we would love to (ARHHmm cough) <laugh> Great times for me as a kid in the 80's/90's. Enjoying the memory lane stuff <ok>

Use to have jokes at times about "Hessle Roaders" and the women dripping in GOLD <ok> Loads of great storys of Hull and fond memories.
 
Bumped into Ray Harvey and his two cronies one Saturday afternoon whilst drinking in Beverley,.mid70s,.remember because it was market town the pubs where open all day.Myself and two mates where sat in the backroom sat next to the fire,.only ones in the room till they arrived.Harvey decided to sit on the bench beside me and politely asked me if I was a puff. I told him I was not.He then asked me to put arecord on the jukebox.I said no,. he replied if I did not he would have me. My mates encouraged me to put on the record,.iasked him what record,.he said you choose I will tell you if I like it.
I am still alive,.for some unknown reason I put on Bonnie Tyler Lost inFrance!
A couple of years later i became a psychiatric nurseand learnt how to deal with personality disorders like Ray,.but on that day i was fair crappingmyself.
Anyway RIP
 
Working at Imperial Typewriters in 1970 a fellow labourer told me he started hanging about with Ray Harvey until one day in Driffield he walked up to a stranger and slashed his face.My co-worker realised in an instant that this was a guy not to hang about with but not make it obvious you were leaving his social circle.
As with a number of other characters mentioned on here it makes for good stories BUT you really would not want to live next door to any of them.

As far as I can recall, CC, I publicly apologised to you on this board (well - you or Asbo?).

Johnny Thirks was, at one time, the only guy around who could keep Ray in check. Johnny was a nice guy - though at times he was driven to do bad things. He once robbed me and a mate of mine, with another guy (Pete Webster - know him?). Johnny always felt bad about it - apologised to me and was always f***ed up about it.

N.B. - If Ray was a mate of yours - you can't be a racist.

The only Tattooist in Hull at the time.
Quite a few of us use to nip out of our nice cafe on midland street and have a few stars or more added.

I remember JF falling backwards through Arthur's shop window one time.. To much Cider.

Mate would be putting it a bit strong. Some of us, who were a bit younger than him once helped him out when he was getting set upon and outnumbered. He repaid the favour to me some time later when some idiot from Goole was going to stick a knife in my back (the idiot thought I was some one else). He and Johhny T always spoke to me for years when I bumped into them. Last time I saw Johnny T was in Botanic in the 1980's, just the same as ever, parka and desert boots on. A lad I know once waited at Paragon and knocked Johnny T all over the station when he came back from doing a stretch for stealing off him. Ray didn't want to get involved. Saw the lad who did it for first time in years recently and I doubt if he weighs 9 stone now, years of substance abuse etc. He was another that was tough with the right targets but not the real hard cases.
Knew Curtis Woodhouse's dad (as I said, I'm no racist). A lot of people made the error of giving him abuse for racial reasons as he was only about 5' tall and came a cropper.
 
Back on Bob Mortimer. He lives not far from me. Good bloke to have has a mate. But if he was not a mate stay clear. Ran a drug dealer off Quadrant because he found out he had been selling drugs to his grandson. Dealer was gone that night.. If we are talking about hard men you cannot then leave out Harold 'Adge' Mullins. Mate of Bob's. My family used to be in the licensed trade and we employed him as a bouncer at the Cavalier Club. Any trouble and if they knew of Harold;s reputation they left without any fuss, if not he could talk people out the door on most occasions without any blows being exhanged. Best bouncer I have ever known. He was an ABA finalist in his youth. Killed a man on the door as a youngster at Charleston Club. Manslaughter. He hit the man who fell and cracked his head open on the floor. The judge said his hands were lethal weapons. Always ready to tell that tale as a warning to youngsters.The pinball wizard of the bouncing trade. 'Never seen him, fall'. Well nearly never. Only problem was some blokes used to come into the club to try and have a go at Adge so as to try and become top dog. He did like a pint of mild, or two however. Once some chap come in when he was worse for wear and dropped him. Next morning he was knocking on the guys door ready to finish it. The bloke never became top dog. Harold is the salt of the earth. He would give you the last pound he had in his pocket if you asked.

Did you ever see Bob's party trick ? Use to pick the back end up or cars, "CRAZY" (I was in ore) Knew Adge/ Adgey (Well my dad did) was always polite to me and i use to think i was hard and wouldn't be messed with because i knew him <laugh> (Kids erh) My Dad became good friends with Bob during a bar fight were my Dad was trying to deal with a few fella's and give Bob a couple of digs <doh> Bob then picked my Dad up and said 'Look you daft twat i am trying to help you, <laugh> My Dad said 'Ok OK put me down, <laugh> And the rest is history.

My Uncle owned Cavalier Club, and I remember Adge.

He was playing the Bandit one Teatime in Cavalier, he'd put a fair few quid in ( always seemed to have plenty of cash on him), then decided to nip next door to put a bet on. I went on the bandit and within seconds he's back, looks at me and starts playing the machine next to me. Well, the Jackpot (£250) only dropped on my Bandit and instead of jumping up and down like a man possessed , I thought " this isn't going to end well". All he said was that he knew it was ready to pay out. I bought everyone left in the Club a drink and went to me Grans and gave her the rest.

We must be related! Three generations of the family owned Cavalier. Grandfather, Mother + Stepfather, and brother.

That's correct. They also owned Concord Club on OPE and Phoenix Club . Also a string of bookies bearing his name.
 
One great Ray Harvey story I heard was how he'd hitched to Scarborough, to the Penthouse, to see a band.

When he left (1 or 2 in the morning), he was walking through the town, heading back to Hull. He got jumped by 3 young 'bloods'. Needless to say, he put all 3 down....

They got ambulance (and thus the cops) involved. Ray got arrested for 'assault'.

No wonder he hated the Filth!
