i think a certain courtois would have something to say about that! widely regarded as THE best young keeper in world football, currently on loan (i think for a third year) at atletico madrid and the certain successor to petr cech. chelsea would be a bad footballing move for ruddy, finances excluding. if he's patient and plays well this season, the suitors will still be sniffing around next summer so unless a ludicrous bid (£10m+) comes in, he'll stay put.

This is true. Chelsea's move for JR possibly smacks a bit of a long-term back-up option.

    JR - Chelsea's Steve Harper?

Quote: "Ruddy is an excellent young goal keeper so we're giving this one a speculative 20% truth rating based on nothing more than half sensible logic and the fact that Norwich may not have the resources to fend of a suitably large bid."

Of course we have the resources to fend off a bid. The fact is, Ruddy is currently more valuable to us than any amount Chelsea or anyone else is likely to offer us. We may not be a rich club, but we are no longer living hand to mouth and in desperate need of funds. These sorts of witterings are never based on solid research; they are spun out of the heads of the writers sitting at their keyboards. Does he know anything about John Ruddy apart from what you can glean from wikipedia? He obviously doesn't know much about NCFC. <ok>

To change the subject slightly, there are rumours on the Pink'un board of a press conference at 2pm. Most likely Redmond (which would be excellent), but any chance of Toivonen coming around as well?

I think this is just a poorly phrased comment from them - I assume what they mean is that Norwich don't have a wage structure that is capable of competing with Chelsea, which is true. If Chelsea were to come in with an offer of 60k-80k per week for Ruddy, we certainly wouldn't be able to compete wages wise - not because we don't have the money (I suspect we actually could easily afford to have one player on that much), but because it would defeat the object of having a wage structure at all and would stop us signing another couple of players on good salaries. If Ruddy is on 20k pw or so, it may well be worth making him one of our highest earners, though. I personally think that, RvW aside, he is our best player and has the greatest potential for success. I can see him moving to a big team aged 30 and winning trophies if he keeps improving the way he has over the last three seasons.

sounds odd to have two in back to back days don't you think Rick? if there was signing coming up they could have delayed the ricky one for one day. just my opinion.

What outsiders don't seem to grasp is that NCFC is now in the happy position of being able to decide for itself what its "needs" are. Do we "need" £10M? Well no actually. It would be nice to have of course, but not in exchange for one of our biggest assets thank you. Is there something else we desperately need that we could get if we pocketed £10M from the sale of JR (less what we had to spend buying a replacement)? Well no actually. Maybe we could secure another "marquee" signing with the extra cash; but do we "need" another marquee signing? Well no actually. And so on. With one qualification: we do all of us need patience! <ok>

I thought it was odd as well, Max, but it is just a rumour. If Redmond had a medical yesterday (another rumour circulating), his signing wouldn't have been definite at 1pm yesterday. Also, RvW deserves his own press conference, IMO.

Deffo - the RVW press conference yesterday was absolutely essential to welcome Ricky and introduce him to the press. To dilute that with announcement of another capture would have seriously undermined the sigificance of the introduction of our record signing.

It would be a good statement for the club though if hot on the heels of yesterday's junket we could announce the signing of an exciting propsect like Redmond - it would show intent and purpose of how the club is progressing.

This is why I asked whether they actually knew anything about John Ruddy. There's an assumption running through the article that what in the end counts for most in these things is money. Their "speculative" 20% takes no account of what JR's views on the matter might be other than the possibility that he may put doubling or trebling his wages above anything else. <ok>

True, though to be fair they do say at the end that it would be a bad career move and that's why it's "only" 20%, which I think is tacit acceptance that Ruddy may want more than just money. In a sense, I think 20% probably is quite reasonable if you consider that, were first team game time guaranteed, I would imagine 95% of players would move from Norwich to Chelsea in a shot. Especially when you factor in doubling/tripling wages.

i think you're putting a bit too much thought into it robbie!

i thought it was a decent article and nice to see someone take the time to think about the reasons for and against a possible transfer rather than the usual impulse guff. the 20% chance of happening is about right. if chelsea bid big (and they have the arsenal to do so) then the club will accept because every player has his price. there would come a price where we simply cannot refuse. i personally think chelsea will turn their attentions elsewhere - they were just testing the water.

Well, we all have our faults <laugh>. I agree that it was refreshing; I was only trying to point out that there is a whole range of reasons other than monetary which come into play. On the matter of alternatives, one could speculate that Fraser Forster might be more easily targetted by Chelski. <ok>
