So the great Michael Owen signed an extension at Man U. This leaves Danny Welbeck's chance of a game at Man U even slimmer. Hopefully this will pave the door for a permanent move to Sunderland for around the £8 million mark. Along with Welbeck I would also like Sturridge who may cost a bit more at £10 million. Adding to this maybe Bothroyd on a free would top off a decent strike force for next season of, Gyan, Sturridge, Bothroyd & Welbeck. Thoughts?
At his age, and with his pace long-since faded, I'd put Owen in the same bracket as Phillips, i.e. someone to have on your bench and bring on when you need something special. In terms of starts, I doubt Fergie is going to favour Owen over Welbeck. Welbeck is being groomed very carefully. I don't think Sturridge is going anywhere. Again, I think Chelsea are grooming a good, young prospect with a future at the club. More realistic is that either Drogba or Anelka will be leaving. I'd certainly expect one of them to move this summer - with a pairing like that you don't blow £50 million on Torres without something going on that we don't know about. I don't think the fee for either Drogba or Anelka would be out of Sunderland's reach - both of them are in their thirties. But wages might be.
Not sure about Bothroyd myself - he has n't done it at Premier League level - I know the step up is often made nowadays but I'd rather punt 1m or 1.25m for Campbell rather than Bothroyd - Only english striker to score more PL goals in the season just gone was DB. Welbeck I rate very highly but don't think he'll be leaving Man U permanently (although he does seem to need competition for his place to give him the lift Drogba will be at one of Europes' elite - we don't need any more Africans as the cup of nations is in January and we'd lose Gyan at least (and possibly Elmo - although Egypt aren't doing too well in qualifying) for this. Sturridge is a good player but likes to dive - if he learns to stay on his feet then no bother.. We'll see eh! - I've found that, since Quinny took over as Chairman, our transfer dealings have been rather private and very few of the early rumours have any bearing on who we actually sign... Larsson may be the only one
isnt that becasue when he first took over as manager, he said we were after Phillips and WBA gazzumped him and phillips wanted to stay down there anyway, ever since then he has been very quiet on the trasnfer front, and who can blame him.
DJ Campbell for 1m (release clause); Crouch for 8m; Welbeck on loan for another season and Gyan would be my choice of our first 4 strikers. You dont need to spend a kings ransom to have an effective strikeforce. I'd spend the biggest amount of money on 2 goal scoring midfielders - N'Zogbia and Charlie Adam ( a right couple of Charlies eh Lol) 12m and 8m respectively. 20m for 2 players that will ease the pressure on the front 2. Add to that, Westwood (free); Vaughan (free); Larsson (free); Johnson (4m); and Konchelsky (1m). 34m Spending 18m Bent sale 16m Net Spending 16m net spending and a very nicely balanced squad.
Hmm, after the DB sale I recall Quinny saying something like the sale ensured viability - I can't remember the exact words I don't think there's a lot of money around. Last season Gyan's £13m appeared to be financed by Cana £5m and Jones £8m. We won't have pocketed all of the DB fee, as we will still have owed a fair whack to Spurs. I'd be surprised if Bruce was allowed to spend much more than £10m in total (for half a dozen players), so arriving at SOL perhaps three or four 'frees' and a couple of 'money' signings. Time will tell
We should use all or the majority of the DB money on our strikeforce then looks like the midfield will be full of freebies such as Vaughan & Larsson and maybe a few quid spent on a centreback and hopefully a left back
have you tried looking in hartlepool or darlington they will prob have some reserves who might be good enough for sunderlands 1st team...by the way thanks for the scoring machine that is daren bent
When I listened to Bruce at the Rainton Meadows, he did, he said the higher up the league we finished, the more he'd be able to ask the owner and chairman for - that coupled with the 6m per season over 3 seasons for bent and the extra 6m we have now pocketed from Villa for the goals he scored and keeping them up
Yeh Sturridge has impressed me a lot, and for £8m I'd get Wellbeck, no more though. As for Bothroyd, I think he'd be a decent signing if free but can't see him setting the world on fire - he's been playing long enough that if he was good enough, someone else would have bought him by now.
This is most of the players out of contract this summer i reckon will could sign 4-6 of these and they would improve our squad. http://uk.klikfc.com/article/275654/players-that-are-out-of-contract-in-summer-2011
There are strong rumours that Berbatov will be leaving Man Utd, so sadly, I can't see Welbeck going any further than the Utd subs bench next season. I still believe that our main strikers will be Gyan and AN Other from Spurs, hopefully Pav
From what i read earlier, I wouldn't mind Cisse- 5.5million, Defoe 10 million and perhaps controversially Kevin Phillips on a free as an impact player.
I have to say I was a massive fan of Cisse and he had a great start at safc but his performances did dip as it became clear that we wouldn't make his switch permanent. he would have snapped our hands off to come here for good and his record in greece is phenomenal. he is turning 30 however and I don't think it fits with the clubs transfer policy but if we were to miss out on our main target I think a deal around 5m for Cisse wouldn't be a bad one
