If the rumours of having a deal close to completion for a box to box player not yet linked with us are true, am I the only one who is a little bit concerned?

Admittedly, we don't know too much about what goes on but MP seems to have identified a central midfielder as a priority this season and seemingly had Wanyama and Banega at the top of his wish list. Whilst we seem to have now turned his attention elsewhere, these two have still not yet moved clubs and are still "available" in that sense.

Just find it a bit odd that if this is all true we havn't played a bit more of a waiting game. It's only July after all (I know he siad he wanted transfers done early but still).

I hope it's someone of similar quaity otherwise I won't help but feel we missed out.

Alternatively, the twitter info is nonsense!

Huge assumptions there. How do you know this third guy wasn't top of the list? I honestly don't believe many clubs chase one player and move on to another when it looks like it won't come off. They are more likely to pursue all three with equal vigour. It just happens one hasn't gone and leaked it to press.

Think he's probably past his best now. Good player at his peak but I don't think he can cut it at the top level now. Would do a goiod job for Nigel though.

Without wanting to sound rude, why would Adkins want him? They weren't here at the same time so I'm intrigued as to why you would make that connection between them.

No connection PTF other than he's looking to strengthen for a promotion push. Maybe should have said a top Championship side rather than just Reading. Baird is versatile and can play anywhere in defence.

We mustn't fall into the trap of feeling that not getting our first choice is a disaster. There are a lot of good players out there and our second or even third choice may turn out be the best fit for us.

Sometimes it's hard though- Sharp was second choice to J Rod and Hooper, Forren appeared to be 2nd choice to Astori- where are they now?

I know what you mean though, would love us to sign an unknown gem on the cheap from nowhere. It may help player/fans to bring in a player with low expectations.... at the very least we wouldn't have to put up with muppets banging on about our 'marquee signing' not living up to his price tag!

Listen to Fran

Bingo. We will have a range of targets. There are thousands of quality footballers. Start with a few you fancy and make some enquiries and weigh up the balance between being the right player, the right price and likely availability. Just remember that some have cockwombles as agents.

And PS. Have you never played FM? You bid for loads and then panic when some start saying "yes" and you run out of money and don't know which one to sign

Peach said we should bring Baird back..... Least Lamballana is using his head unlike Peach.

Given that our central midfield was pretty good last year and we occasionally seemed to lack a little spark in the final third I do wonder why we've been linked with so many central midfielders and so few attacking players, particularly wingers.

Perhaps our resident Croatian could give us his thoughts? Where you at SFCroatia? :p
Halilovic will be good. Never heard of the other guy. Seems like way too much money.

Both players are extremley talented.

Halilović already played for Croatian senior squad against Portugal in a friendley, he did really well. He is somewhat like Messi in stature, appearance and style of play, he has this amazing left foot, he is a great dribbler, ball just sticks to his feet. He could go a long way in this game.

Jedvaj, at 17, already plays at central defender for Dinamo Zagreb and he is easily amongst top5 central defenders in croatian first division. At 17! Whish we had bought him. He is a modern defender, is able to play with ease across all back four position and at defensive midfielder also. He, put simply, has all the abilities and predispositions to become one of the best defenders in the world.

So, at first it might seem as a rash investment, but i think Levy knew what he was getting.

Dinamo Zageb's director is having a press conference in about an hour regarding this transfer, then i will post what he said.

Damiao,Osvaldo,Bueno,Stoch,Banega etc so a few.

Perhaps Mauricio seriously doesn't think our midfield is good enough or, more likely, is concerned about how we'd manage if one or other had a long term injury.

Well only having Cork and Morgan and basically no back up, it's pretty obvious we need another cm.

Extra strength there means more chance of getting the ball to the creative players to do their stuff.... I do think there will be more creativitiy/goal scoring to come.

Look at the logic:

First priority - CB - Done
Second Priority - strengthen CM 9what would have happened if Morgan got suspended or injured) - Done
Next priority - goals or creating them - lots of rumours in that area?
Next priority - full back cover?

Seems to me that the plan is good and taking shape. It is only July 1st today.

Still think Chambers will be back up for Clyne and we still have Fox.... :(

Swansea are in talks with Lyon for Gomis. Probably means they have given up on Bony.

Yeah it was just an observation. I'm not complaining about another central midfielder, we probably need one more. For me though we do have starters in that position that are good enough and have consistently performed well. We don't really have that on the wing (particularly on the right) so I was expecting it to be a higher priority and there to be more links in that position.
