And therein lies the problem. To break through into the "glamour club" zone Saints need the better players, and the perception of the wider football community to be aware of what they are trying to achieve, and that they are highly ambitious and serious in trying to break the stranglehold of the top 6. This is another big step for Saints and it has to be played cleverly and carefully.

 

Sky Sports reporting now that his agent has come out and said he is no longer negotiating with Southampton (Wanyama)...

 

Think you will find that Southampton are no longer negotiating with them.

 

This is all being discussed on the Saint Victor thread, and it is just speculation as we have heard conflicting stories.

 

Whilst I agree to an extent, this shouldn't stop us from a)trying to lure players of the calibre required to fullfill our ambition and b)also looking at young players who might fall under the radar of top european clubs or who might want to join us for other reasons. If you look at top clubs like Man City and Chelsea, some of their most important and best signings in recent years have been Hart, Kompany, Cech, Zabaleta etc I.e players who didn't cost them the earth but have been a massive part of their recent success.

For me, recent signings like Clyne and Rodriguez could grow into top 6 players quite comfortbaly and so I wouldn't be too dissheartned at all if we ended the window with a couple of "under the radar" players, possibly like Redmond and Bueno. If we keep building then it won't be long until we are considered a club with real potential and are able to attract the best of the best. If the right players are interested, great, if not that doesn't mean we can't continue to improve.

Agree, but I reckon that Wanyama just isn't interested in coming here. I reckon he would have tried to push it through by now if he cared that much. So even if Celtic paid ALL the agents fees, he could still say no. Maybe that's why they haven't even offered up half. Doubt the player or his agent would want to lose face now either - surely any goodwill is down the drain? It's not like he's stuck at Pompey, he is at a CL club, so his fallback isn't too bad - though could be losing a bit of goodwill there too, by the sounds of latest reports. Gets to play against the likes of Cliftonville!

It names a price though, of $3.8 million

 

Ha ha, Billy will be like a new signing!

It's pretty hard to take the article seriously after that little snippet, although I really was hoping we would get him earlier in the window.

Maximum number of foreign loans established I believe. I don't think that stops 'transfers' between two clubs with the same owner but with no/low fee though?
