Right then, here's my take.

The Scotland on Sunday paper said Victor flew back from holiday (he was in Kenya, as you can see from his tweets). I do not believe for one minute that a player would fly back from a holiday in Kenya, without knowing the initial offer. His agent will have been carrying out initial discussions at very least whilst Wanyama was away.

I fail to believe that he would've flown back, taking up a large portion of the day, then meet Saints and reject us so quickly. If he was that disinterested or the offer was that risible, I don't think he'd have even come back to the country.

Just my take.

Papers never lie. He flew home at a moment's notice to agree terms on a deal that he hadn't even heard about, only for Saints to offer him a pay-for-play deal. The truth is right in front of you!

Same here. Can't believe it would happen that quickly.

We have a reported history of meeting the price, but offering wages that are low by British standards. If Wanyama chooses Cardiff over us it cannot be for footballing reasons (as they have only just been promoted) or for family reasons, so it has to be the wages. We may have to upgrade our wage ceiling at some point, but don't see Wanyama as a reason to do so.

Relax Fran it's a article from one of the worse papers about. Wait and see what happens.

Yep. It's similar to the Ramirez story, you could always root out the BS reports from when they just don't make logical sense.

Wanyama's agent is, speaking to a few Celtic fans, reputedly an arse of a man too. I think a lot of the crap can likely be traced back to him.

Agents hate Nicola (which should make us like him more) because he's tough on them. Sometimes it means we don't get a player, but at the end of the transfer window I'm sure we'll have what we need, just not the names we first thought of. MP may not be happy, because managers just want the players they like and the finance is not an immediate concern. Keep smiling, Mauricio...welcome to Saints.

Like fran I'm not overly concerned by the players we bring in, as long as there are no major exits and the management is stable or improving. It's hard to be worried when the current management have such a good record of getting the job done. I think we will sign victor despite him preferring other clubs.

Last night we see a preview of the sunsport back page revealing Wanayama is off for record 12.5m deal and Celtic would be stunned if he doesn't join.
8 hours later (whilst most people sleep) and the Record says the deal is off after talks broke down last night.

Call me lazy but why would anyone be holding contract negotiations on a Saturday night.
Every media seems to picture transfers as these hectic and intense negotiations which go on long into the night and Cortese has to order in Chinese as his team of lawyers and medics work round the clock.

It's not transfer deadline day, it's the middle of summer.
"Big Vic, it's Nicola. We've booked you a room for a few nights at the lime wood hotel. We'll meet you there for afternoon tea Monday to discuss terms. They do the best cucumber sandwiches. Ciao for now!"

There are some people (mainly on Twitter) getting in a bit of a pissy cause it seems like he's not chomping at the bit to join us and would prefer other teams. Do people honestly expect players of his caliber to set his wildest dreams towards Southampton? Think it'll be a long time before we're at that stage of prestige.

In the Championship and League 1, we were a top club and paid good wages and prices for players. Whilst we are still offering good money to buy a player, the salary doesn't seem to be high enough to overcome our newbie status. I think that Nicola is doing the right thing...it can be the wage bill that kills you. There are players out there that we will sign and who will fit in...no single missed player should be regarded as a disaster.

Guys, look how much attention we're paying to that Record article. This is what they were going for when they published it.

Equally our wage bill is inflated by having so many players who haven't been able to keep up with our progress. If we sign players who aren't clearly better than what we already have than we risk having dead weight, I would rather sign 3 very good players on big wages than 5-6 good players on lallana's wages. I don't think handing out long contracts to players who aren't guaranteed first team football like puncheon and lallana is helping us here, but they deserve to be shown some loyalty and that loyalty helps the camaraderie and fits in with our vision of a family club. We should be able to support our wage bill with all the tv money in any case.
