I guess I was thinking more the £3-7m bracket who suddenly explode into £20m worth of player...

Morgan is the only one of our buys in the last 10-15 years we could put in that bracket... Obviously we have been blessed with youth players but at the wrong time for us and lost them...

To be honest, hanging on to all the first team from last season will be a massive result

Got to remember where we have been over the last few years, so transfers have had to be comparible to the league we were in. With that in mind Rickie Lambert was the equivilent of signing Van Persie.

Was going to put Rickie in that given where we were. Just want to find an equivalent of him for this level (JRod might yet be that one)

It's a fair point. Celtic got Wanyama for less than a milion. But it's always a gamble, and i guess Cortese wants to buy already proven(to an extent) players, so he can push on faster

Yeah, I don't see us being able to take that gamble. Putting someone in like that is using up a squad space with a total gamble.

But Michu only cost £2.5m... Sometimes worth the "gamble"?

It can absolutely be worth the gamble. I don't know if I'd count Michu specifically, because they knew they were getting a decent player (just maybe not as good as he was), but every now and then a player like Pahars comes from nowhere and ends up quality - I just don't know if many Premier League teams these days can afford the luxury of giving players like that a chance.

    So... 3 £7-10m players or 1 or 2 with 3 or 4 £2-3m "gambles"?

I think we needed to add 4-5 players at least to the squad after last season and only have 1 so far.

Jury seems to be out on whether Lovren is good enough and we've spent £8m on him; clearly spending that amount doesn't guarantee it isn't a "gamble" either.

Every transfer's a gamble in a way though, you never know for sure if a player's gonna settle or if he'll break his leg in the first training session etc. While I personally don't rate Lovren, in the eyes of our scouting team he's someone who is at least starting quality - if you're picking up some no namer from some little town deep into Europe then he may be nowhere near ready. And hey, even if you trust your scouts, game time is an issue. Every time you play this theoretical gamble, someone is missing out. Do we drop Rickie or Jay to try out a promising Moldovan striker we picked up for peanuts? Do we let Morgan, Cork or Wanyama take a back seat to allow a nifty little Lithuanian get a game?

I feel you can put Yoshida, Mayuka & Forren into the "Pahars" category of signing. Perhaps not cheap but not breaking the bank in today's prices.

Clyne was about the same price as Michu but because he's not a goal scorer he doesn't get the same fanfare.

And Michu had a sensational season. Where as Clyne could only be described as solid.

This is where the argument confuses me... "Every transfer is a gamble", but "we can't afford to take the gamble" on cheaper less well known players... Which is it?

If we are going to spend £30-50m (not ITK just hypothetically) then would people rather that was 2 or 3 players or buy 1-2 big names and then buy 5-6 to bolster the squad and allow us to rotate and keep players fresh?

"I feel you can put Yoshida, Mayuka & Forren into the "Pahars" category of signing"

Maybe in price but not in quality... Yoshida has been solid but still has the capacity to make errors; not seem enough of Mayuka to be able to say anything but feels like a waste of £6m if he doesn't play; likewise Forren but he may be one for this season as we keep hearing.

Clyne is excellent and would put him in the Pahars category for quality.

Don't need to be a goal scorer to be noticed just play well in your position...

Mayuka wasn't 6m, if I remember rightly he was 3.5m.

What do you mean, which is it? Obviously every transfer is a gamble, but an £800k signing from Skonto Riga is obviously going to be a much bigger gamble than an actual established player - not in terms of matching their value, but of being up to the task.

I assume your point of wanting to find Pahars-esque players is literally that, picking up people nobody has ever heard of and having it just turn out that they're great. We can't do that and the 5-6 squad bolstering players are different - most people on here will have heard of everyone we signed last season. Similarly, Michu isn't like that because he was very well known, just cheap. Unless I've misunderstood you and you don't mean Pahars-esque, you just mean inexpensive, in which case there's not much discussion to have anyway because inexpensive players can still be relatively low risk, like Clyne and Davis.

The latter which is why I couldn't understand the massive disagreement... Was more about more for the money rather than just 2-3 massive signings.

Genuinely wondered what people would prefer?

Give some managers £50m and you'll get 1-2 players but some will get you 6 or 7 good players for that.

Obviously give it to Rafa and he'd buy 50 awful players... ;-)
