Our GD suggests our defence wasn't that bad compared with other teams in the bottom half.
Surely GD isn't the figure to look for as it includes goals scored.

Only four teams conceded more than us, only two of the bottom four conceded more than us.

We certainly improved after a bad start but wasn't just about everyone shipping goals early last season?

The goals conceded column suggests it was. The goals scored column shows only Fulham in the bottom half scored more than us and that was only one more (50 to our 49).
I was under the impression that our defence statistically was about ninth best for the latter half of the season. So not great but not too bad either.
Yes we improved over the season but the point remains that the centre of defence was the weakest part of our team last season. I would also suggest that when we shored up the back we lost a bit of attacking threat. Better central defenders will hopefully mean our defensive midfielders and particularly our full backs will be able to help out more when we're attacking.

I'm surprised that our attack is so good - the goals dried up under MP and a lot of our goals came under NA. On the other hand, our defence was awful under NA and wasn't too bad under MP. Of our goalie, four defenders and two CMs, only one needs urgently replacing (Jos) and that's the weakest area of the side. The four ahead of them, only Lambert and Rodriguez look like starting the majority of our games next season; even Lambert will probably only just about manage that with his recent fitness issues/minor injuries.

Not sure about these, but are over on SaintsWeb.

Official Reading news: One player failed a medical with us on Friday. Drenthe scheduled for a medical today. 100% true. #readingfc

Final update: Player who failed a medical was from Southampton. I don't know anything else. I have told you what I know! #readingfc

Popular consensus seems to be that it was Sharp.

GD is what makes the difference though. I mean, I'd be happy for us to concede 3 every game if we were scoring 5 every game.

Why no surprise? At Sharp going there or him failing a medical. He had that nasty knee injury before he joined us but seemed ok.

No surprise at Sharp going there, link up with Adkins again ... the failing the medical thing doesn't surprise me.

Dean Hammond? He seemed to do well at Brighton, I think he could get a spot in a good Championship side and at reasonable price.
