Really? That really would surprise me, and make me think we were going to drop some serious money during this window. Where did you see this?
Not so sure, has looked very lost at Chelsea when I've seen him .... saying that, it might just be the wrong environment for him
I think he's lost because he's trying to adapt to a new league while being used way too sparingly. He was much better for Bremen.
Christ, if we do then we'd have done about 20m just on centre backs. Then we still have to buy another wide defender as we have let Richardson go. So probably £25m or thereabouts before we have even started looking at a midfielder or striker.
I reckon the pot allocated to Cortese after Markus' passing was for a certain amount of expenditure each year, increasing upon promotions etc. I think we would have had a slightly larger war-chest allocated for this season than the last but Cortese wanted more hence the fairly public negotiations with the Liebherr's over additional funding/his new contract.
We don't necessarily need another right back. We may be planning to use one or all of Yoshida, Cork, Lovren and Chambers as back up for that position. I would think £5m might be a bit pricey for backup as well. Even if we did spend £25m on the defence that's not a major surprise seeing as our defensive record was one of the worst in the league last year.
I was under the impression that our defence statistically was about ninth best for the latter half of the season. So not great but not too bad either.
