Looking forward to hearing people try to pronounce Henrikh Mkhitaryan next season. Guy on SSN just called him "Henry Mee-tar-an". Close enough.

With chambers, Cork and Stephens as back up we should be OK. If we are primarily relying on Cork it would make another midfielder a concern. If Davis is the solution to that, we need back up for the hole. If Gaston is the solution for that we need back up for the wing.

    bloody dominoes.

No I've not been told anything of the sort. Nor have I asked, but yeah, nothing about Banega from this end.

I forgot about Stephens. I'm getting a little concerned as to whether he's made any progress since we signed him. I suspect we'll get another central midfielder in, whether it's Banega or someone slightly more realistic, and more cover for those attacking midfielders as well. We should hopefully be more comfortable rotating than we were last season.

Of course the ideal is not to pick up cover, but to pick up better players while still leaving an opportunity for the incumbents to work their way back in. I think Cork is a position we could really do with improving and central midfielders lend themselves well to rotation so yeah the midfielder is the thing i'd be after.

It ends the domino effect early in the chain.

Agreed. Like Wanyama, Banega is interesting because he also allows us to throw a couple different looks out there, depending on the opposition. In games against the bottom half of the table, you can have Schneiderlin/Banega/Ramirez through the middle, which is a pretty scary trio. Against teams where the denial of space is crucial, Schneiderlin/Cork/Banega is enough ball-winning goodness that they'd make Barca think about hoofing it.

Also, like Wanyama, I'm not going to picture him in a Saints shirt until there are fewer than 30 pictures of he and Cortese, because I won't believe it.

Am I crazy for preferring Wanyama to Banega? I genuinely think he's better.

Wanyama will cope with a cold evening match presumably, having been up north of the border.

I was certainly interested in that rumour.

Lovren cost 8m euros up front with a potential 2m euros in add-ons. so about £9m overall if you count the add ons.

I'd still like to see us get a 'proper' wide man in. A pacey player who largely sticks to the byline and has a decent cross on him. De Ridder but actually good at football. Someone like Lens perhaps. We certainly need that kind of option I feel.

I heard 10m euros up front with add ons last place I checked. Nobody is going to know for sure. I'm going to be conservative.

I just might. Is that an option?

But yeah, I think Wanyama in a couple of years could play for anyone. Also he's great in the air and we don't really have one of those in midfield right now.

I'd prefer Banega to Wanyama, but we won't be getting either.

In fairness to him he kind of has some unfinished business with them. He only left his post last time due to heart problems. Pardew also seems like a man who manages the squad and signs the players so i dont see how much influence he will have.

I'd wet myself over either of them but probably slightly prefer Wanyama, although Banega is more proven I suppose.

I think Wanyama would probably fit into our team and our style of play better (assuming we are still adopting the same formation next season.) But you couldn't say no to a player of Banega's quality.

He's made progress, he's progressing well ... he's just signed a new 4-year contract, and Poch has gone on record to be a big admirer. Also captain of the U21s and a regular for England.
