    And this time next year he'll be out of contract and free to move anywhere, but we'll be back in the Championship cursing our lack of forwards for the eighth season in a row and looking forward to another few years of penny-pinching in the Second Division. Then he'll end up at another Premier League club where he'll start banging them in for fun.

    Also, what exactly is the relevance of him playing for Scunthorpe? I'm not much fond of them, but I seem to recall him keeping them in the Championship with the best part of twenty goals in a season they finished just above the relegation zone. Henrik Larsson spent years at Celtic, scoring for fun in a far better side against the also-rans who were no worse than they are now. Was he a bad striker? No. And no, before you respond, I'm not saying Hooper is as good as Larsson was. But the point stands.

    It saddens me to see yet another moronic turd sign up to tell anyone and everyone who doesn't partake in the "yippeedeedoodaharen'twefuckingfantastic" ****athon that is being a City fan these days that they're not a real fan. Why is any criticism of the team, manager or owners met not with a reasoned response but "you must be a wum, can't you see we're going to win the league".

    They know nothing about football, so how the hell are they supposed to know the value of a player, or his potential worth to the team/club? Cutting corners might work for Allam Marine, but it won't at a newly-promoted Premier League football club

    Then what in the name of God does that make you?

    If you ever become successful Erik, you might gain some understanding of the importance of not overpaying and getting value for money from your purchases.

    We bid £4.5m for a striker who's in the last year of his contract and has never played in the Premier League and you think it's not good enough?

    Get to ****.

    This reads - "I'm rich and successful and you're not, ergo I know best. So, like, SHUT UP"

    I'd be happy to pay another million at least. I understand we made some hefty financial errors last time we were in this position, but that's because we were forking out for some real ****e. I mean, what's better value for money - spending an admittedly inflated £5m on two or three players that we really need and who would benefit the team, or £2.5m on six mediocre players who'll only make us a different shade of ****?

    Despite what some believe, we ain't going to stay up on 'team spirit' or 'battle' alone (though having said that, we didn't show any of the latter last season). We'd have more of a chance with a few quality players through the spine, who are capable of providing a moment of class, making a Moore-esque last-ditch challenge or getting a goal out of nothing.

    What a ridiculous comment. He hasn't signed for us or Reading yet and it's not like we're scrapping the barrel at the end of the transfer window. Don't be so melodramatic.

    You're reading too much into it, I just meant stop talking bollocks.

    We've just bid £4.5m for a player who has no Premier League experience and his club want £7m.

    For less than half that, we could buy Odemwinge, who has already proven he can cut it in the Premier League.

    Or for less than we bid for Hooper, we could buy Austin, who's just as likely to make the step up.

    Overpaying for players is not the way to run a successful football club, so it seems the Allam's do actually know more about football than you.

    OK, I believe you. Thousands wouldn't <cheers>

    £7m is too much. I'd still take him at anything up to £6m though

    Not a bad player, but he's 31 (32 in a month). Signing old fogies was a mistake we made last time

    I think we need him as well to have any chance of staying in the Premier League. I've heard figures mooted of around £15m as a budget this summer. I think we'll need an additional five.

    My own personal favourite!

    You see, that's just the point, you can't guarantee it. And you can't underwrite the £7m either. Basically you want someone else to back your hunch to the tune of £7m. Why don't you sell your house, and put £70k on him scoring 25 goals in the premiership this season. I'll bet you can get 100 to 1 on that. Then you can buy him next season.

    No? Thought not.

    8 million?

    That would be the second year in a row a striker had signed for a championship club with a 8 million bid. Crazy money being tossed around once again.

    1) I neither want nor expect us to pay £7m;
    2) The club are clearly willing to pay in the region of £5m, and my valuation is £5.5-6m. Hardly a major difference;
    3) I'm not asking the Allams to spend their own money. I do not care about the Allams. I care about the club that they happen to be in charge of;
    4) I don't remember saying I thought Hooper would get 25 goals;
    5) Without a couple of decent forwards City as a team will struggle to get 25 goals next season

    I can never understand these "budgets". Surely there's a trade off between transfer fees and wages?

    We need a few £3m - £5m players or spend £30k - £50k on wages if we want a couple of good strikers and goalkeepers and other players.
