Rest in peace, Ron. One of the many players I wish I could have witnessed in my lifetime, whatever friendly mini-tournament we have this year should be in his honour.
Ron Davies, a legend no doubt. Absolutely not the best footballer but the best header of a ball there has ever been. He and Paine were a match made in heaven. Ironically, it was 3 Sydenham crosses in that Man Utd game. Always a lovely chap but like many of that team he liked a drink or two. Also, one of the few players to play for Southampton and Portsmouth. I for one, feel very old and mortal today. RIP and thanks for the memories.
Ted Bates paid what was then a club record fee of £55,000 to bring him to the Dell from Norwich City in 1966. He repaid that fee many times over.
Great, great player, remember his arrival from Norwich, a bargain buy at £55,000? A true Saints legend and a very nice, unassuming guy. Met him many times in town as Ron was about 12 years older than me and it was in the days when Saints players could always be found at clubs and pubs in town and Ron was always very, very approachable and chatty. Ron lived in a quite nice semi in Wilton Crescent in Shirley and could often be seen in his big Jag usually with a very attractive girl or two on board, he certainly put himself about a bit,v on and off the park? Sad day, I feel a bit gutted.
A great loss. Memory goes back to 1968, at college in Newcastle. Had great arguments with Newcastle fans about who was greater centre forward Big Ron or Big Wynn who played for the Toon. Ron was the only Saints player that the locals had heard of.
I was heart broken to read this sad news. In my eyes he was the greatest player ever to put on a Saints shirt. He was a joy to watch. I stood next to him in a queue in Owen Owen on one occasion and I was so in awe of the man that I couldn't open my mouth to thank him which is wanted to do. We shall be drinking a toast to his memory in this house this evening.
He would scare the life out of any of today's centre halves ,like somebody else's mentioned not the best footballer but WHAT a player with the ball in the air ,seemed to always find someone with his nod on,s as well as goal scoring , great link up player ,feeling very sad right now ,yet another part of my teenage life dying away ,

Sorry to hear about the great Ron Davies passing away. He was some player. Terry Paine;Matt Le Tissier;Ron Davies -- you people were spoiled rotten.
Here's a link to Second Stain's brilliant article on the great man: http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/92575-Article-Ron-Davies-Saints-Legend-Football-Southampton
Very sad news. First ever Saints player I ever met in person. Was a good mate of my dad, remember him visiting our home. Have a framed photo of Ron and myself which will always be cherished. Fantastic header of a ball with a massive leap, seemed like he hung in the air for ages. RIP Ron Davies....a Saints legend.
The Club have a tribute up on the website now: http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/ron-davies-an-appreciation-840269.aspx
Not only Lamb who gets upstaged. Yep, a good tribute. Looks like Duncan Holley is still an historian for the Club.
