Always makes me laugh when you see Part Two of that classic video where Jimmy Hill is talking to Ron the next day on The Big Match programme. First Hill makes a bit of a joke about Saints new Away formation of 4-4-2, and then they discuss the contested goal. Obviously Ron says it's his, while Jimmy questions, but I think allows him it. Then twerp [I'm sorry, I never thought he was any good] Brian Moore declares that in his opinion Ron had scored 3 goals and not 4, hence it was an own goal. These days, if Rooney hits one at the corner flag, and it gets a favourable bounce off a player, the goal is awarded to him. Ron scored 4 goals that day because the ball was on its way into the goal. Great video from you tube. Thanks for posting that. He may well have liked a drink (in common with many ex players of the era) but in reality we should remember that he chose and enjoyed his life stateside. Despite some thinking he had fallen on hard times I don't think Ron had any regrets really. He was the best striker of his era and was already a legend when I first saw him play. I was so in awe of his play it took me quite a few visits to the dell to appreciate it wasn't just a one man team. Paine and Sydenham could both deliver a cross on a sixpence and we were lucky to keep that side together as long as we did. God bless you Ron. There's a hell of a team up there in heaven and now they can rebuild it around you.

No, before my Saints time - my first recollection of a Saints away strip was the `76 final. Soton Colleges used to play in amber and black in the 70`s - I wonder if that was why ?
Probably. I only saw them in the amber/black strip a couple of times, as I was only a kid, so the opportunities would have been slim. I'm pretty sure we had a colour TV by then though, so ALL my viewings may have been through that, to be honest.
Colour TV! Bloody hell we were too poor to even have a little B&W telly. It was 1972 before I bought a telly. I've always been a bit reluctant to adopt new technology. In organisational culture theory I think I am known insultingly as an "old salt" in other words I resist change and am the last to adopt new innovative methods. I think that sounds about right.
My old Dad loved his TV viewing. When colour TVs came onto the market he waited until they became affordable and then took the plunge. I still remember the Phillips TV he had and the classic westerns he used to love watching. Running up Hill Lane to home from The Dell on Saturdays was always made better knowing he'd have Star Trek on and I would have only missed about 5 minutes of it. I'd run indoors, jump into the chair and he'd update me in hushed tones as to the story. He was a grumpy bugger but we did have one or two things of interest we could share.
