Going by what the offence says in the rules, it appears that he's been betting on Premier League games, possibly including those that he's been involved in.
He may have actually been backing his own side to win and it would still be against the rules. Hopefully it's nothing more sinister, but he's very silly at best and in real **** at worst.

Yeah, QPR are dreadful!

The rules are quite wide ranging but what punishment he gets depends on what he was gambling on, and how often. If it's lower league stuff or things he wasn't involved in, then it's probably a fine/warning/suspended penalty. If it's competitions he was involved in or he used inside information (injuries) then he can get stiffer penalties. And matches involving Spurs/QPR means big trouble indeed.

I don't know what he's being accused of doing. If its proved that he's been betting on QPR to lose games I wonder what the consequences will be?

To be fair, he was about the only one on that team trying to stop them from losing, so he'd be pretty silly to have put money on it happening! <laugh>
Maybe he bet whatever his win bonus was, so he'd be up either way?

He's been on loan at nine different clubs (quiz question- can you name them?) so with that inside knowledge he'd make a great tipster.

I hope for his sake it's nothing more sinister that a few inconsequential bets.

He was at the right place. 'Arry could recommend a decent lawyer. However, if he was betting on QPR avoiding relegation, he might end up getting certified.

If he's found guilty it will be interesting to see what the punishment will be.

Earlier this week a jockey was found guilty of a similar offence (Eddie Ahern) and has been handed down a ten year ban.

Let's see how tough the FA are in comparison.

BBC 5 live said that this does not involve any of the games Townsend himself has been involved in.

Whatever it is, its bad enough to say he's been a bit of an idiot, puts himself on the backpages for the right reasons raising his profile, then does this. Timing wise (not that there's ever good timing!) it couldn't be worse! <doh>

That could make a huge difference. Not so long ago it was life-long bans for stuff like that. What an idiot he is though. As if being a footballer leaves you a bit short of cash. And then to gamble on FOOTBALL...

I wonder how clear it is made to players at a young age how serious this is. Cos I could imagine a young player thinking "well - break someone's leg and it's a three-game ban so having a little flutter on my team to win can't hurt..."

Basically it's easy to imagine a youngster not understanding how hugely serious the offence is. Would not have been surprised to see a years-long ban if he'd bet on QPR games. Though the possibility of him betting on Spurs games is still open...

I was astonished to find he's played for 10 clubs at his age - there are many players that finish their career having played for fewer!

According to BBC

Tottenham: 18 appearances, three goals
Yeovil: 10 appearances, one goal
Leyton Orient: 26 appearances, two goals
MK Dons: nine appearances, two goals
Ipswich: 16 appearances, one goal
Watford: three appearances, no goals
Millwall: 11 appearances, two goals
Leeds: seven appearances, one goal
Birmingham: 16 appearances, no goals
QPR: 12 appearances, two goals

When David Button was with us, we sent him out on loan 13 times to 11 different clubs !!!!!

What a bloody idiot. So annoying that when he finally looks like he's ready to step up to our first team he goes and jeopardises his whole career on a whim.

We don't even know exactly what he's been accused of, yet.

Allegedly he was caught taking money from people betting on Spurs finishing 4th this season, a clear irregularity if ever there was one
