Going by what the offence says in the rules, it appears that he's been betting on Premier League games, possibly including those that he's been involved in.
He may have actually been backing his own side to win and it would still be against the rules. Hopefully it's nothing more sinister, but he's very silly at best and in real **** at worst.

BBC 5 live said that this does not involve any of the games Townsend himself has been involved in.

I was astonished to find he's played for 10 clubs at his age - there are many players that finish their career having played for fewer!
According to BBC
Tottenham: 18 appearances, three goals
Yeovil: 10 appearances, one goal
Leyton Orient: 26 appearances, two goals
MK Dons: nine appearances, two goals
Ipswich: 16 appearances, one goal
Watford: three appearances, no goals
Millwall: 11 appearances, two goals
Leeds: seven appearances, one goal
Birmingham: 16 appearances, no goals
QPR: 12 appearances, two goals
We don't even know exactly what he's been accused of, yet.

Allegedly he was caught taking money from people betting on Spurs finishing 4th this season, a clear irregularity if ever there was one![]()
