Oh and also I hardly think us moving a player to JUVENTUS is throwing them on the scrap heap! :)

You're quite right. I'd be disappointed to lose him though. We need to keep these players with good reputations as young players at the club, not simply swap one for another. If Southampton becomes a better-known place for foreign players to come to and progress, that can only be good for us. I don't think Cortese would be wanting to let him go either.

I wouldn't be to fussed if he went. Can't deny the lad has talent, and will no doubt be a star in the future. To me I think he's just one of those players that will never settle in England. He could be a star for Juve' , but I just think he's to much of a luxury for us. If we could get £15-20 million for him then let the lad go.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a couple of mediocre seasons when he first moved to the premier league. I'm sure you'd have found a lot of United fans then saying exactly this.

This. Give Gaston another season, preferably injury-free and without any family bereavements back home, and then judge him.

Very true PTF. I'm not saying I want the lad to go, as I'd happily give him next season to prove him self. I hope he has a blinder and lives up to his price tag, which I dont doubt he can. A good pre season to get fully fit and we could see what he can really do. But if the lad wanted to go back to Italy and play for Juve, then I wouldnt lose to much sleep.

As did Henry etc etc.......it would be madness not to try and develop him over a couple more seasons at the club.

I think these assessments of Gaston are kind of misreading the situation. I don't think it's a case of him underperforming; I think it's a case of him not being the right kind of player. You say he just needs time to improve, but I don't think that's the case - I think he's already more than good enough but doesn't suit the style of the team.

It was the same situation with Ronaldo. He didn't quite fit into the Manchester United system, and the only way they could fix it was by changing their style and basically building the team around him.

It wouldn't make financial sense for us to just break even on Gaston, an offer would have to be in excess of 15m for us to look at it IMHO.

There's a long list of players who've taken a while to adjust to the Premier League and I'm not at all sure Ramirez would be that easy to replace.

I think this is one of the reasons people dislike Saints making big transfers.

The level of demand for instant success and class performances is large.

Now I know someone will quote his fee here, but Gastón didn't ask us to pay £11.8m.

Over the four years of the contract his fee works out at £3m a year for his services. He's been worth £3m this season and, in my opinion, will improve and grow as the team gains better players and progresses also.

Unfortunately he's not as good as Ronaldo. We did it with Le Tiss and I'd be comfortable doing it again with a player of that quality, but we don't have a player of that quality. Ironically, Le Tiss would probably fit into our current system perfectly.

High pressing is a tactic deployed by the back line and two central midfielders, so yeah no problem there. His weakness would be as it was before - chasing back; but the high pressing game makes the middle of the pitch quite congested and Le Tiss excelled in that situation. He was a master of keeping the ball and dragging players out of position, picking players out with unpredictable passes, and of course could score from outside the box. Yeah, he'd be perfect.
