Henderson! He'd be my pick.. I'm biased, I like the fella, I can see him only improving and therefore becoming a fixture in the team. He's another that puts a shift in and would certainly lead by example!
Pepe got the armband yesterday when Carra went off so that's probably a good indicator that (if he's still here) he's in line to get the job.
I do think Henderson is captain material. But not yet. Maybe when Gerrard hands it over he will get a nod. Henderson and Wisdom could be the future captains. Maybe that is a hint.
Because he is inconsistent, comes across as if he has a don't care attitude and isn't vocal or the best player? Just a guess mind
I also dont see Johnson as captain material in the slightest. I am a bit confused about why some people say he is captain material. No disrespect to Johnson. He is a great full back. But no captain.
So it comes down to Lucas, Suarez, Agger, and Reina. I'd not give it to Reina, as I really don't think keepers need a C or VC armband. Despite what most believe about modern football, we need vocal leaders who can inspire, and Reina can't do that short of running up the pitch. Suarez would be a controversial choice. He deserves it for his performances but the latest Cannibalgate probably rules him out. Lucas, good choice IMO, if he gets back to his best. He played well against QPR again, I'd like to see more building on his tackling and aggresiveness. Agger - best choice. Why not? He bombs forward, yells at his teammates, and organises defences. It would make sense - the most senior defender hands it down to the new senior defender. English is an issue, I'm not sure what his speaking level is, but usually facial expressions and pointed fingers are enough to get the point. He is also the most aggresive player on the pitch sometimes, (see Torres, Fernando) which is something we need.
I think Suarez would be a great captain, but next season is too soon probably. It might even calm him down a bit if he has that extra responsibility. For now, Reina's the natural pick - even though I'd prefer an outfield player. Followed by Agger. Lucas is way too quiet. Downing is my plan F, Allen plan Q and Terry plan X, but he'll still lift the trophy anyway.
I think Lucas sets a great example with his work ethic but agree his is possibly too quiet. Reina would be ideal were he not stuck between the sticks. Lucas edges it for me. Massive shame we don't have a local lad who stands out at the moment. Spearing would be ideal in a few years, just not a good enough player. Shame that.
Ajax fans weren't that happy when Suarez got the captaincy according to what I read quite a while ago. They felt the responsibility restricted him on the pitch and weighed him down a little. I think I'd give the vice captaincy to Agger and hope he grows to be a stronger character on the pitch and within the dressing room with the extra responsibility. Captaincy isn't always about finding the person that is the most vocal or the biggest character, its also who would benefit most from being captain, and I think Agger would benefit a lot from being vice captain. More so than Reina & others anyway.
Our recent captains have been the quiet type who lead by example - Gerrard and Hyypia. I think it's time we did get a vocal captain - I look at Gerrard and he doesn't inspire me anymore. Those long range goals, the lung busting runs are pretty much non-existent. If we continue to go down the path of giving the captaincy to someone who leads by example - Suarez is the only one who would motivate/inspire. Agger and Lucas are very good but efficient. They don't inspire. Seeing Suarez chase lost causes, fighting for every ball is something that gets the crowd going, not mentioning his goals and skills. I'm not saying that I want Suarez to be the captain but if we're talking about leading by example (in terms of performances and NOT behaviour) then it can only be Suarez.
I can see why. The idea of giving captaincy to a player in a free role either diminishes his role because he is organizing the rest of the squad or diminishes the squad because he is free-roaming and unable to organize. On another note, I would love to see Kelly kick on this upcoming season and stake a claim.
I quite like the idea of Suarez as deputy skipper, but that's partly the devilment in me Can you imagine the ****ing reaction? It'd be debated in the House of Commons
Can I ask why or is it the obvious things? I refer to my previous comment that the armband means little in this instance. Suarez running is bollox off, shouting at folks and generally having 100% commitment and drive to winning will encourage others anyway, they won't have time to think whether he has an armband on or not! A captain is a leader but their main duties are going for the coin toss and, if lucky enough, collecting trophies. If we didn't go down the 'lead by example' route, who do we pick that is vocal? The main candidates seem to be Reina, Agger and Lucas; people don't want a keeper as captain and I don't think the other two are vocal enough. That's why I'd love it
