I'm not anti- Becks as such, TMT. he was a good, not great, player. But the whole circus that has surrounded him for the last 10 years or more has been an incredible bore.

Always gave 100% for England and always turned up when called, even to sit on the bench. The match against Greece that Spurm mentioned was exceptional. I don't think I've ever seen any other England match in which one player carried the whole team. It's (rightly) remembered for the final free kick (can you imagine the pressure) that got us to the World Cup, but he looked like a man possessed all the game. There's often talk about 'role models' and while I wouldn't then suggest that anyone should be looking among footballers for such people, but if you did there's not much you can say against a family man that has kept (almost) at the top of his game until the age of 38 - sure there are a few others, but not many.

I was being sarcastic. I do not think she's a minger. It's obvious why he picked her.

And I didn't look at the armpit. Other things drew my attention...

When putting the Spice Girls in order, she was never number 5.

    [edit]

In truth, I'm a bit pissed off. I've always been slightly younger than Becks and each game he played meant I still had a chance of playing myself.

I've never actually met David Beckham personally, but my sister has. He came into the school she teaches at and took a coaching session with the kids.

He was there for the entire afternoon and sat down with the staff and had a cuppa tea when he'd finished coaching. My sister says she couldn't believe how nice he was and took a genuine interest in asking the staff about their lives and teaching, rather than just sitting back and taking questions

He might be all over the media constantly, and yes, he might have brought a lot of that on himself with various publicity stunts.
However, no one can say he's not an excellent role model to youngsters and hasn't contributed heavily towards making a difference to those who are less privileged. Take all the media speculation away and just look at what David Beckham has done or does, it's very hard to get on the guy's back.

Footballers would have a much better name for themselves if some other players stepped up and set an example like him.

I think some people can says he's not been an excellent role model.

From the anger issues early in his career, to cheating on his missus with Rebecca Loos, to having a controversial neck tattoo, not everything about Beckham has been about charity and soft voices.

    but was rebecca loos proven?

Tattoo's aren't as taboo as they used to be, so many people have them now.

Surely the man he's become since having the anger issues, is a great example of how one can change for the better?

Nope, not proven, but the Beckhams paid her off anyway. Smoke and fire and all that stuff.

Tattoos on the face, neck and hands are still taboo. Most repitable tattoo artists wont give you a tattoo in those places. At the time, he was going through his skinhead look, and the controversy starting there. "He looks like a football hooligan" came the calls.

I think it's fantastic when someone solves their anger issues; good for them. When I said "some people" I didn't mean me. I couldn't give a flying monkeys who he sticks his... who he holds hands with. And although I'm not a lover of tattoos, they aren't really any of my business.

He'll forever be remembered at United as part of the illustrious class of '99 and an absolutely fantastic captain of his country, in terms of passion and dedication.

He might be hated by many, and many begrudge him of his achievements saying he's been carried by better players along the way. In '99 David Beckham has the unenvied task of stepping into the boots of suspended captain Roy Keane, alongside Nicky Butt who was no replacement for the suspended Paul Scholes, making Beckham's job even harder. He provided both corners which led to both goals in the dying minutes, a player who learned his lesson after every mistake and made it count. He might have been blessed with an abundance of talented team mates throughout his career but at United, he was definitely considered a driving force behind our most successful ever season. By age 24 he'd won everything at club level, Gareth Bale turns 24 in two months without a single medal, yet is regarded amongst many as one of the very best in the world. This isn't a snipe at Spurs I actually believe he is as well (and will go on to win a lot of medals), but credit where credit is due, and Beckham deserves all the credit for his achievements, John Terry he is not.

Maybe "taboo" is the wrong word. They're frowned upon.

Just like names and pictures of girlfriends, a good tattoo artist will try and talk you out of having tattoos on the face, neck and hands. They'll probably refuse to do the work if they have any scruples.

I'm generalising. I imagine some don't care as long as you hand over money. I haven't got any but the missus has. We did a fair bit of research before she started mutilating her skin.

Someone tell me different. I'm cool.

No quite! But the old fella always had a mind of his own. His "independant activities" did cost me one marriage, and almost the other. He just never was able to behave himself!....;)

They never took her to court, nor did they threaten to - which says everything.

That Greece game was ridiculous. Proper Hollywood stuff. There was only one player on that pitch who deserved to go to the World Cup that day.

Someone mentioned John Terry earlier and I think that's a good point. The worst you can say about Becks is fairly superficial stuff (he's a pretty boy, he's over-hyped, he's part of a media circus) but really he's had an incredible career, was a model pro at every club, clearly a nice bloke and has made more out of his natural talent than the vast majority of players do. In the world of football I can have zero idea why anyone would call him an arsehole or whatever.

Even the fact that he never comes across as all that bright - he even played that well: keep your mouth shut, don't express any opinions ever and smile, be polite and look handsome.

I posted negatively about Beckham retiring on another thread, but it's not that I have anything against him personally, just the crap in the media that I knew was about to appear.
He's done well for himself and good luck to him.

Oh well the thread cheered up a bit. Okay colin no problems. I considered him class act and one impossible to follow. To me there seemed to be too much pressure on 'one of the lads' because that's what he was and that's how he saw himself. He handled the media very well and I hope he stays in football in some capacity.

Anyway lads have a good weekend and then a good summer. I'm off to Monaco on business so will miss the match and I don't post in the close season. Thanks for A LOT of laughs and good football debate and be lucky.
