Pochettino has this morning been reported as declaring that he will resign as manager if Cortese is to resign. Source: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/104..._he_will_leave_Saints_is_Cortese_goes/?ref=nt
Just heard news on TalkSPORT, although im a Man Utd fan I can honestly say, this can't happen, even though he doesn't speak English he has been great for Southampton, his tactics are good and makes the team play some attractive football. All the Southampton fans should get a petition to back the manager and chairman, owners of football clubs have to much say, it's the fans that make the club!
I think MP said it to underline how unlikely it is that Cortese will leave rather than to cause mass hysteria.
I'm not sure it was meant as an ultimatum. And I'm not sure this warrants another thread to be honest.
just reading the tweets on today's press conference, he didn't sound that positive about the last 4 months, which is fine as I'd prefer him to be realistic. We could have finished the season off with a bang but have faltered, the last 3 games have been our worst spell of games under Pochettino imo. It's clear that he is a very talented manager and is the right man for the job. I wouldn't want anyone else in as I think he can take us to the top. That echo article has me more worried than I have been, I still think Cortese has the ambition and will therefore get what he wants.
We already now know Cortese isn't going anywhere. Therefore, also Pochettino is going nowhere. Storm in a teacup, pretty much brewed up by our local irresponsible rag. And they wonder why their circulation is non-existent.
Yes, that's true. But the Echo have run with it as if their publishing lives depended upon it. They are making much more of the situation than there is. If they wanted to print the truth, they could suggest that there was a possibility of Cortese leaving, but that it was quite small because of the splendid job he's done so far. They could also recognise that the fanbase is also pretty much 100% behind Cortese. Do they print any of this..? No. They'd rather undermine the truth with articles to cause anxiety in the readers. Fortunately, we now know better.
That's true, although I am doubtful of the Echo's ability to escalate a situation. Everyone knows that they would love to see the back of Cortese so they can send their 2-bit journalists back into St Marys. Personally I reckon banning them was one of Cortese's finest hours.
While I agree in principle that he will probably stay, I don't think we do know he will. The only source for this (unless I've missed something) is him telling a fan at the awards night. He's hardly going to divulge that kind of information in that situation, so I wouldn't necessarily take that as gospel.
What we know is that it is Cortese's intention to stay, so if his whole weight and thought is geared to staying, he'll stay. He wouldn't lie to the fan in that situation, especially if was the easy answer to make. There would be no point. If he was truly in trouble with his position, he'd use every possible means to generate support. In my opinion, he doesn't need it. This is a contract situation that will blow over come renewal time.
There is no need to deliver actual journalistic analysis to create the story, they just need to manufacture doubt.
Loyalty to the man who got him to move his family across the world to take the job of a newly-promoted English side in the midst of a relegation battle. I have absolutely no problem with what Pochettino is doing. Showing empathy and support for his immediate boss. No different to Fonte, Cork, Lambert and Lallana voicing support for Adkins when Cortese was clearly reviewing his position.
For some reason the quote "We are preparing for next season. I have total faith and total confidence Nicola will be here for next season." wasn't of so much interest.
But none of them came out and said, oh yeah we'll leave if he goes. Poch has. I don't mind him showing support, but to say he'll leave if Cortese goes, that's what bugs me.
