I know we should be picking players from years gone past but what about RVP this season at our place... He seemed to be barely involved but any time the ball came near him he seemed so ridiculously dangerous. I can't remember seeing a player at such a higher ability level relative to everyone else on the pitch for ages (in person that is, not on TV).

When I saw Best at the Dell he managed to get himself and Rodney Marsh sent off! Think we've seen some great ones over the years but for me its goal scorers and the two that stand out are Rush and Fowler.

I was at that game too - Bobby Moore played too. If I remember right, Marsh got subbed because he went in the huff after Best got sent off.

I agree Matt. The obvious one to mention for this season would of course be Bale but for me, RVP shaded it. I was immensely disappointed with Suarez. Ignoring for a moment what kind of person he seems to be, I was actually looking forward to seeing the footballer in him. Instantly forgettable.

Ronnie Eklund for me. He was head and shoulders above anyone else I've seen. His vision, touch, movement and passing were amazing and his link up with Le Tiss looked unplayable at times. Such a shame he got injured, it's not every day we get to sign someone from Barcelona!

Sorry, just realised it's non-Saints players... doh!!

The very definition of above average, in my opinion. How that man has carved out such a career, LeGod only knows. His main claim to fame is longevity, and that's about it.

Obviously, George Best. But Kevin Keegan for Liverpool was absolutely superb too, purely as an effective player, as was Peter Osgood in his prime for Chelsea. I'll grudgingly admit that Allan Clarke of dirty Leeds [and they were too in those days] was aptly named Sniffer.

Thierry Henry

The entire Invicibles team runs him close, they were just so good to watch. Especially; Bergkamp, Viera, Pires, Petit, Llungberg and... Wiltord!

Totally agree. He was good in the early 90s but It seems to me he's been living off his reputation for a while now. A lot of his passes go wayward, and if he wasn't surround by players as good as United's, he would have been forced into retirement/ down the leagues a fair few years ago.

It was ridiculous wasn't it. Single-handedly destroyed us, and if I remember correctly - kicked off the bed wetting that has persisted in some sectors for the course of the season!

Correct. His goals were just naughty. You just had to applaud him, the technique and awareness was super.

The best performance I saw from an opposing player was by Ralph Coates of Burnley back in the sixties. He completely dominated the game and was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch and there were some good players on both sides. To me this was an example of a player who never really fulfilled his potential. Tottenham signed him and shoved him out on the left wing where he became a bit of a periphery figure. This was a man who should have been given complete freedom to roam and to run the game the way he thought fit - he really was that good.

Interesting post. I also thought Ralph Coates an extremely good player. He used to remind me a little of Bobby Charlton, not only in appearance [he started to lose his hair early on with the inevitable comb-over of the time]. but he used to boss the midfield when he played alongside Martin Dobson [Crikey, how did I remember that without looking it up..? :) ] at Burnley, before Spurs snapped him up. Incidentally, I think he also played alongside our Whispering Dave at said club..! He played for England, of course, but never quite did what he did well for both Burnley or Spuds. He was a bit like David Armstrong for Saints and England. Immense for the Club, but indifferent for the Country. Neither got a decent enough chance to show what they could really do. They'd had great players in front of them. Martin Peters for Ralph Coates, and Bryan Robson for our David.
