Cagliari midfielder and Belgium international Radja Nainggolan may soon make a move to English Premier League side Southampton, according to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport.

The Antwerp-born Cagliari starlet has done well to gain the trust of manager Ivo Pulga, with the 24-year-old making 28 appearances for the club this season, missing only three matches due to yellow card suspensions.

This level of skill, work rate and discipline has attracted a number of clubs, among them AC Milan, who are looking for a replacement to their holding midfielder Nigel de Jong. Fellow Italian side Napoli, along with Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg, are also keen.

Nainggolan wanted to leave the Serie A side last summer, but club president Massimo Cellino slapped a hefty €10M price tag on the Belgian, which may have caused some clubs to reconsider their bids.

But now Southampton have joined the race to sign Nainggolan and the Saints are willing to release the needed cash to bring the Cagliari midfielder to St. Mary’s this summer.

The Belgium international, who transferred to Cagliari in 2010 from now-sixth-tier side Piacenza, is under contract with the Rossoblu until 2015.

He has won four caps for his country.

Yet another player I've literally never heard of, I should probably take more of an interest in football outside of England.

Who else do we have to play the holding midfield role apart from Cork and Schneiderlin? No one.

Would love him, but would probably relegate Cork to the bench which makes me sad.

Not necessarily, but it certainly wouldn't hurt matters to have a third defensive-minded CM capable of playing that high-pressure, precise-tackling style...we weren't the same team with Cork out, and that's not really Davis' game.

Wow. Judging by the number of bookings he picks up, this could be a clever plot to drop us down the fair play table and avoid the Europa League.

We could conceivably play Nainggolan and Cork in the defensive role, and push Schneiderlin further up.

If Cortese is dead serious about getting into European competitions and competing domestically and on the continent, we will need to expand the squad and add to positions we may already consider "strong". I'd be pretty pleased if we managed to get Nainggolan in. Same goes for Astori.

Are we going to look at players outside Italy at all this Summer? <laugh> But would be a cracking signing.

Might have to resurrect the saint Davide thread!
