A great night apart from the result. The lads did us proud.

We were beaten and we can't say that Benfica didn't deserve to progress, but my word were the margins narrow.

A lick of paint on the Benfica posts, Cisse being 6" further back when Bigi passed, a penalty shout, HBA keeping his shot down. Any would have done it.

Lost to a very good team, but had them ****ting themselves. Just a shame that it will be at least 12 months before we get another shot at it

Bit down on it myself. To have the possibility of dying heroics snatched away and realising we wont be seeing Toon in Europe for another few year (not too long I hope )

People saying we should have started with Marv and HBA but I think Pardew got it right. HBA particularly would have run out of steam well before the end and Marv was looking completely shattered after the last game.

Overall a good effort. Once again no luck, ref seemed to give almost every 50-50 Benfica's way, bought their diving and failed to give a penalty when Ameobi was clearly fouled with the defender making no contact with the ball.

I also think he got it right and it's almost worked. Stay strong and don't conceed for an hour and then bring on the guys that could have a run at tired legs, sadly we couldn't quite grab that second goal but still a great second half performance and we had them rocked for pretty much the whole second half. Looks good going into Sunday!

Penalty for sure when their keeper went in. Pretended to be injured. Never went near the ball. Red card and all. Damn disgraceful refereeing. They did not want English teams in the semis. Simple as. As the other year with the Norwegian ref.
