Sir John Madejski - "We have got to appreciate that Margaret Thatcher was a world leader who did so much for this country. So much that she deserves a minute's silence."

Sat 13th April 2013 - Reading v Liverpool 15:00

Good luck with that one, soppy bollocks. <laugh>

Madejski, Dave Whelan, Doug Ellis and Graham Kelly have been leading the calls for silence. How ridiculously detached must they be not to realise what a disaster any attempt to hold a minute's silence at a football match would be?

In Tory donor Madejski's case it's even worse - there will already be a minute's silence at Reading v Liverpool on Saturday ahead of the 24th anniversary of Hillsborough. Can you imagine the fury from the Scousers if he tried to make it a joint silence to mark Maggie's death as well?

There wasn't even a silence in the Manchester derby on the night she died! Although in fairness, Man City at least sent an Argentinian sub in the second half.

As everyone knows I'm quite neutral and non-commital when it comes to politics, but any thread about Thatch is bound to end up becoming a political slagging match when those damned lefties start.

Perhaps people could discuss this without bringing their own view of her into it? After all, it's about other people's reactions on the day that we're talking about.

I agree this is a recipe for disaster, I for one respect that she did a lot for the country, and brought us back to be a serious player in the world. However the country is to divided and you either love her or loath her, so a minutes silence would never be respected.

To be perfectly honest, whichever Chairman decided his club will be holding a minutes silence for Thatcher could/should be arrested on the spot for potentially inciting a riot!

Peoples emotions run so deep over her, in both directions, as has been seen on many a forum over the last few days, that anyone stupid enough to initiatate a minutes silence for her could trigger major violence throughout that/those particular ground(s)!

This would always end in tears.

Why should football fans in the UK give their respects, after what she tried to do to the sport? (before anyone says 'how would you know, you werent born' - I do read)

It'll be a North & Wales v South divide if this is attempted.

Stupid idea & there's far too many of these minutes of silence now.

It was the most stupid idea ever. I cant imagine a single ground in the whole of the UK where a silence for her would be immaculately observed.

I'm pretty sure while watching the Manchester derby I heard a chant of "There's only one Arthur Scargill"? Even without a minute's slience I'm sure some crowds / fans will take it upon themselves to sing some anti-Thatcher chants at the weekend.
