I want a players first quality to always be effort, talent comes next. If a player is not willing to work hard they can do one as far as I am concerned. Perhaps why I supported the likes of Kuyt, Lucas and Henderson whilst they took stick of many fans!

Personally, I believe talent is the first criteria. Technically gifted players can compensate for their lack of effort but strong spirited players will never reach certain heights - use Spearing as an example.

I do understand what you mean though - players should have both qualities but I rather take a technically good player over a hard worker.

He was available for 6 million about a year ago....

Porto are demanding €40 million for striker Jackson Martinez.

The race for the Colombia international is heating up, with Inter Milan, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Barcelona among suitors.

Martinez has only been playing in Europe for 12 months, but his form with Porto has made him one of the most sought after strikers on the continent.

He has scored 28 goals from 35 games for Porto.

Crazy how football works. But he was a real target under Kenny and it's a shame we didn't go for him.

Edit:- People want to talk about having a target man like Andy Carroll in their team etc.

Jackson Martinez can not only win aerial duels and hold the ball up, he has fantastic movement, intelligent and great finishing.

The old style English centre forward has no place in the modern game IMO.

This is what leaves me scratching my head sometimes..... Comolli played a part in Carroll, Hendo, Downing, etc...... but he was also looking at Martinez, Matuidi, Goetze so how the **** did we not get some of these fantastic players for a lot less?

That's life I'm afraid. That crazy summer cost us a lot of money and time. But I think we're on the mend - since January, we've been very good IMO which is thanks to Coutinho and Sturridge who represent a good sign that our recruitment team is established.

Apologies for daring to take this topic back on... er.. topic.. but in the words of the Paddy Power advert.. Some chap off Twitter, knows another chap off Twitter who's only on Twitter because he didn't get enough likes of Facebook and got booted of Google+ because he posted rude images of garden gnomes spoke to a chap down the local off licence after being dropped off there by Bob the dodgy Taxi driver, said a deal to sign Eriksen is close/done..

Obviously have to be at a certain level in both fields. Spearing as the workrate but he isn't talented enough. Much like I would want someone like Berbatov, he has undeniable talent but ****all effort.

Take that back!

Sorry.

"...but he isn't talented"

Better?
